2018 340i Navi and Cluster brightness

Just picked up the 18' 340i 2 weeks ago. It is so much improved over my 13 335i.

I tried to search but could not find any real solution.

I have recently noticed that the Display panel dims by itself. It is a feature that i did not have on my 13 F30 335i or 15 F36 435i.

To my surprise, i could not find an option to turn it off in the idrive. (only the brightness at night???)

The dial to the left of the steering wheel does absolutely nothing at day time.

Is there a fix for this? It is very very annoying.

Does your car have tinted windows? I have them on my X1 and the Nav screen dims off and on during the day. I've found that if I lower the drivers side window it brightens back up immediately. I'm assuming that the light sensor is on that side of the interior, but not sure where. My tint is only 40% so it's not unusually dark but somehow seems to be effecting the brightness of the screen.

Yup, it is exactly that, the tint.

I rolled the window 1/3 way down and it got brighter immediately.

The light sensor is within the instrument cluster itself.

As a test, If you take a flashlight and point it directly at the cluster (to simulate sunlight) it'll brighten the cluster.

Is there any fix other than removing the tint?

Sorry to unearth this old post but my 2018 F36 LCI apparently has the idrive 6 software which allows “brightness at night” as the only option for adjusting the brightness of the idrive screen. This results in making any daytime brightness changes to the screen impossible. My car was delivered with dealer tinting that tricked the too aggressive light sensor into dimming the screen when changes in light (changing directions when turning), and cloudy days which wash out screen legibility during daylight hours. The remedy I sought after the car was taken to the dealer and they offered no solution except too dark tinting, was to remove the tining and replace it with a lighter tint. This helped only a little, so I have learned since then there is a coding solution to return this value to a more logical option which allows the adjustment of the overall brightness of the screen as opposed to the current “brightness at dark” idiocy.

Anyway, I will see if the dealer will agree to do this coding without charge, if not, I suppose I’ll play my aging eyes card and seek some form of ADA sympathy! I absolutely love my car in every other aspect than this, the B58 is a Wards 10 best for a good reason! Thanks guys...

The nav screen is one thing, but it seems the instrument cluster does not have backlighting during daylight, unless the headlights are on. If they are off, so is the instrument cluster.
