brake pop when reversing

There is a popping noise when I press the brake while in reverse. It's usually only one, noticeable noise coming from the front of the car (update: I think it's the rear). Only in Reverse and not in forward. Spoke with my SA and he says this is normal. Do I need to worry about this or is this normal?

I'd be concerned. It probably indicates some wear or loosening. Most of your braking, and all of your breaking at speed, stresses the brake parts in one direction, so they'll wear/loosen accordingly. Braking in reverse could cause the parts to shift, causing the pop noise, whereas going forward again they just settle back to what's for them become normal.

My GC does the same, I addressed it and nobody said anything worth noticing.

Isn't this something about something moving within the caliper when you do the initial slide back in reverse?

Funny I hear this on my buddy Igor's car last night when he backed up. Not you Igor_1080, other Igor, lol.

EDIT: yay tagging isn't working again, so stupid.

It's normal. I can't describe the mechanism in detail from memory, but I do recall that there is a built-in "self-adjustment" of the handbrake that occurs when using the brakes in reverse. The noise, I think, is something like the slack being taken up. I could be wrong but I think every car makes a similar noise braking in reverse.

But the parking brake is on the rear wheels, he stated noise from the front. Not sure the exact mechanism used in these electronic parking brakes, but wouldn't expect much 'noise', not like the old drum and shoe style.

Normally have my radio on when I am driving though, unless it was a decent sound I wouldn't hear it.

None of mine ever have, other than immediately after doing a brake job. Drum brakes do have a mechanism that self-adjusts when in reverse. Combination disc/drum, which have a separate drum brake for parking/emergency will do this too. I don't know if that's what the F30s have, I haven't had mine long enough to take a look. At any rate this adjusting is complete after driving the car in reverse a few times after doing a brake job. What you will hear from discs that's normal is an occasional clunk if the car has been sitting for a few days. That's because normally the caliper and pads 'float', but they can stick in place a bit after sitting unused for a long period. They should free up and float again after driving the car literally a few minutes. If they don't there's a problem, usually just requiring that they be pulled, lubricated and reinstalled. BTW, while you technically don't need to use the parking brake with an automatic, you should, just to keep the mechanism from seizing with extended periods of not being used.

All I can say definitively is that mine doesn't do this. If that makes mine abnormal I'll take it.

M Sport brakes? I haven't heard it with mine *yet*, but it's been completely normal on my other cars equipped with 4 piston brembo calipers.

I have m-sport package, but not the m-sport brakes. Are the 4 piston brembo calipers regular non m-sport brakes? And when you say "completely normal," do you mean you do not hear the noise?

I actually listened more carefully after work today, and I think it's actually coming from the rear.

I have had the M performance brakes about a month and I have heard them pop a few times. I was beginning to wonder myself if there was an issue.

Thanks for the response. So is this normal or can it be fixed?

Also, does anyone know whether the calipers on the 4GC (m-sport package, but not m-sport brakes) are fixed or sliding/floating?

When I said "completely normal", I meant that hearing the popping noise is "completely normal". The pads are slightly shifting on the retaining pins inside the calipers (brembo 4 piston calipers).

recently changed my brakes on the brembo 4 piston calipers, I am having the same issue, I was wondering if this has anything to do with the caliper springs/clip (did i install it upside down lol)

Should we grease the retaining pins?

Won't last long and would come right back again, as soon as grease gets "dried" out.

Pad-shifting mechanics - completely normal.
Here is what's happening

p.s. using Brembo M-Brakes [THP+M Sport] - get the same sound every time [initial application though] brakes get applied after reverse.
