muffler

Ordered a new muffler ((weld on) Magnaflow Performance Exhaust 14851 Race Series). Mainly wanting a different sound, hoping it's not too loud. It should also help with back pressure, yes?

Probably not. Back pressure is caused by all the components of the exhaust system, and the main factor is the pipe diameter. There would probably be a lot to gain by changing the entire exhaust if it used inch and a half diameter pipes, but it doesn't.

So even with the catless downpipe - adding this muffler won't add any more power? I didn't think it would add much but reckoned some at least.

It might add some, it might not. Upgrading a Honda Civic is easy, upgrading a BMW not so much.

The general consensus is that aftermarket mufflers add no horsepower on the N20, or really F3x BMW's in general. The only place that one can reasonably add power with the exhaust is the downpipe, which you've already done. You'd be surprised how well designed the factory air paths are, including the intake. There is still yet to be an aftermarket intake that actually adds power, because the stock one is already not a point of restriction.

I dont know, looking at my stock intake, there are so many baffles and redirects to quiet down the intake sound that there HAS to be a secondary effect of slowing air down, the gain might not be huge, but im positive there is a gain, even if its small.

Im interested to see how you fit this to your car... please share exhaust photos once complete. And a video (for sound) while your at it.

Assuming the one you ordered looks like this, Im confused as to how you will make it fit?

That might be a concern if naturally aspirated, but a turbo doesn't just blow air into the intake manifold, it also sucks air through the air intake. Intakes that create more intake noise can actually reduce performance, since they get their air from under the hood, which is hotter than air that's pulled from outside the car.

Exactly. Hence why I'd be hesitant to replace my well engineered stock air box with a tube and filter intake. Nothing against them as some people like them for the noise, but there's little to no power gain to be had. Same goes for a muffler.

Yah... Not sure how easy it's gonna be to make that fit unless you want the exhaust outlet behind your tire coming out the side. I would imagine this will require at least a little bit of custom metal work.

Will post pics/vids. ECS tuning says it fits. Worst case I return it. I think it will fit though.

Well I knew that seemed too easy - I need 2.5 not 2.25... back to the drawing board

Ininitally i knew the aftermarket muffler needed a separate tip and that I couldn’t use a universal but once I saw the ECS tuning website confirm it would fit my year/model/etc I went ahead and ordered. Enough members were skeptical so I checked the sizing / 60mm exhaust outlet vs 2.25 inlet didn’t add up so called Magna in good ol Oceanside and Anthony informed me it would be best to consult directly with
a good muffler shop vs ordering one online. It was less than 24 hrs so I was able to cancel.

If performance is your goal, you are going to want to aim for closer to 3 inches, not 2.5.

Read through this post, it might help you:

https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1464771

Also, if you are trying to stay single tip, you might want a muffler more like this to replace your factory muffler:
