2016 320i Oil and Coolant leak (High Mileage)
Hey Fam - Im new to these turbo car issues. Im coming from a NA E92 M3.
Car Background: I bought this car brand new back in 2016 hoping to put A LOT of miles on it. Currently I have 135,000 miles on it (Relax) .. Ive never had ANY issues with the car since I bought it. Just regular oil changes, brake rotor/pads, filters, Brake flush, new spark plugs, and a new bulb for the front light. Recent issue: Since the hot weather started here in Los Angeles about 2 months ago, my car has been leaking oil and coolant. It's not a lot, but enough to drip onto the down pipe and under carriage causing some smoke. The coolant is doing the same thing. I also noticed a medium thick build up of oil on the crank case and O2 Sensor. My oil is still at Max and Coolant is good. The oil temperature ranges from 200-250 F while driving up to 4000 rpm. Temperature outside ranges from 70-95 degrees Fahrenheit. I have attached pictures. Let me know if any of you know what could be going on. I have an appointment tomorrow morning with a local auto shop who specialize in BMW. |

i see your valve cover gasket is leaking pretty badly from the pics but that wont cause a coolant leak. have the cooling system pressure tested to see whats going with that

I forgot to mention: When I got my spark plugs replaced, the mechanic said it was throwing a misfire code on cylinder 1. He swapped coils between cylinders 1 and 2 to see if it would throw a code again, and it did. So I'm assuming that is a coil issue. BUT, could he have tightened something too tight or left it a little loose?

Diagnosis
Here are some invoices from the diagnosis I got yesterday .. Labor charge seems too excessive .. My bushings and struts are completely fine ... The flex disc has a small small crack in it, nothing concerning ...

I seem to remember there being a recall for the turbo oil line on the N20.
I would probably take to BMW dealer for diagnosis. They may not be as expensive as you think. Especially compared to this indy quote. |

There ya go... thats your excuse to visit dealer. Request that the give car a check over during visit and then reevaluate the situation at that point. Be sure to let us know the outcome. Im definitely interested in the source of your leaks. |

the oil line recall is for if u get a puff of white smoke out the tailpipe after the car is cooled off, overnight to morning usually. oil drips down the pipe into the turbo. the recall will give u a new oil line with a one way check valve that does not allow oil to drip down. not saying the op does or doesnt have a problem with turbo...but deffinatly get it to people that know what to look at!!!

Haha SSPADE, you work for a BMW Dealership? You definitely gave me an excellent excuse to go into the dealership. I hope they can take care of me. They did a lot of stuff for my M3 which was way out of warranty, so I hope they're as nice now. |

Yeah I figured this much after all BS im hearing from these repair shops. The ship part is that I already paid a "diagnostic fee" 2 times at 2 different places. Ill take it to the dealer though and get it figured out. I just don't want them shutting doors on me as soon as they see the mileage. |

I also thoroughly cleaned my engine bay. Took the cover off and cleaned most the oil residue around the valve case, HP fuel pump, and cat. We'll see where its "sweating" from now.

Would like to also raise parts to change topic alone with this oil leaking issue since I am collecting related information.
From personal understanding, it the BMW's design defect of Valve Cover and gasket so when the car comes to high mileage, engine oil will leak. The correction is to replace the gasket and valve cover. Here comes my question : Does everybody still replacing the BMW genuine valve cover (P/N:11127588412) or choose aftermarket brand enhanced part like : URO or ECCPP ? URO reference link : https://www.bimmerworld.com/Engine/G...X4-Z4-28i.html ECCPP reference link : https://www.amazon.com/ECCPP-Gasket-...s%2C340&sr=8-3

Wassup Fam - My apologies for the lack of updates. Been busy!
So what ended up happening was that I took my car into my BMW Dealership because I was sick of being toyed around by these indy shops (sounds stupid going to a dealership right?).. I paid them $180 to fully diagnose the oil leak and CEL I was getting. (They were nice enough to give me a new 330i G20 as a loaner for free) .. Couple days later they called and said the following .. -Performed crankcase pressure test and found crankcase pressure value within spec. -Performed replacement of valve cover gasket upon clients approval. -De-greased and pressure washed engine compartment. (Questionable. Turned out safe and okay). -CEL reported a broken/stuck Thermostat (Stuck on open which was good). -Test drove vehicle and no further oil leak was measured at this time. Parts: -Valve cover gasket set $73.19 -High Pressure Pipe $140.48 -ISA Screws and washers $$7.16 -Profile Gasket $21.66 -Thermostat $$97.65 -Labor $800 (Definitely got ripped off. Couldn't argue it.) The car doesn't sweat or leak oil anymore and my CEL is gone, which is good. But, something else started happening when I get my car back from BMW (Of course) .. NOW Im noticing a strange noise from the car when I increase RPM's from 25mph and on. Its kind of like a low frequency moaning sound. Not a pulsating moaning sound but a progressive moaning sound. When I let off the gas the sound goes away. When i step back on the gas the noise comes back. Maybe unrelated to the engine but more of a tire/wheel issue? Any help is awesome! |
