Anyone had a Mini 1.6 diesel?
So, the Mrs little Fiesta which was a wicked little car, nearly 10 years old and only 30k on the clock got written off last week by some stupid, uninsured woman pulling straight off from a give way junction...
We're tempted by a little Mini hatch, in particular the 1.6 diesel which claims up to 70mpg (and higher in some cases!) and £0 tax - it's purely for a cheap runaround and we've been looking at 12/13 plates. Just wondered if anyone has any experience? pros and cons? Can't seem to find much on them and pretty sure they share a similar chassis to a 1 series.. Any help or advice would be great! Cheers

The fiesta was also a diesel, 1.4 - never had a problem and it always got a good blow out.

Ford started fitting DPFs to the Fiesta in April 2010, the cars were generally on sale in about June / July, once the old stock had been cleared 30k in 10 years, almost certain to get DPF problems. Which, if you're lucky, will cost £500 to fix. If the annual mileage is that low, petrol or even electric / hybrid are the only sensible solutions. |

Friends got 1.6diesel mini and they done dpf delete and egr as it was causing problems, they millage is about 8k a year, not good for town driving. You will better of with petrol. Ride is little on hard side on them too on big wheels and rft tyres.

Petrol Mini would be fine but wouldn’t choose a diesel. Not really sure why anyone would select a diesel mini as the petrol ones drive well and are economic. Only reason to go diesel is for big miles and if that was the case a Mini would be the thing to do 25k per year In.

Got a petrol Mini of current shape. Had a petrol Mini of previous shape. Mini’s should be petrol. Both averaged over 40 mpg if treated well, more than 30 when confined to town in stop start traffic...
Personally on a limited budget I would get another fiesta - ecoboost if you can, zetec trim, with a few miles. Should be less than equiv Mini and still zero tax on the 99ps ecoboost. And really good fun to drive and pretty cheap to run, cheaper than a Mini.... |

We had a 2013 Mini One D 1.6 90bhp which performed really well, engine was fine for long and short run and the car performed better than you'd expect given the low weight. No issues with DPF / EGR, just need to be sensible. Getting an understanding of how the car has been treated and driven is key. MPG was mid 60's on a run, low 40's city crawls. As a second runaround that will get a blast every couple of weeks i would recommend one. Much better than the NA 1.6 petrol's which are very poor imho.

We had a 2012 Cooper Pimlico special edition - first my wife’s then my daughters. Both loved it and both replaced it with f56 petrol Minis.... |

The other factor in favour of the diesel is the range - unusually they have given it a larger fuel tank than the petrol version, and she hates filling up for some reason, expecting me to do it, so the Cooper D was an easy choice. |
