LED DRL Dim when Turn Signal Active *** SOLVED ***

Is this possible???

I've seen Audi's and Mercs do this and I thought I saw a new F20 do this the other day.

Is it possible to code the DRL to dim, or go off, on the headlamp the turn signal is flashing on?

It is possible and is sorted in for non-adaptive F30/F31 LCI POST#29

For LCI F30/31 with Adaptive see POST #102 (Solved by MichaelNRW )

And for F32 / F36 4 Series with adaptive LED POST#53

For F15 with Adaptive see POST #117 (Solved by MichaelNRW )

Only works if you have LED headlights

That would be fun to code. Subscribed.

If that functionality is not in the lighting module already (and from all the coding "cheat sheets" I've seen, it's not), I'm not sure this would be possible. Most FDL coding is just turning a feature on or off or adjusting a value as far as I can tell. You can code to allow substitution of LED bulbs if your car doesn't have them already and to adjust the brightness of the halo rings, but I haven't seen anything about disabling the rings when the turn signals come on. Some of the cars you mention use the same set of LEDs for turn signals which turn yellow when flashing but go back to brilliant white otherwise. Our cars have a separate turn signal bulb/LED, so the halos stay on if DRLs are in use.

As I said, I thought I saw this on a new F20 the other day. Maybe there's an updated CADF for the FEM or we can look at the difference between a newer F20 and current using TokenMasters NcdCafd tool

Not necessarily go completely off but dim. The DRL's already dim when the headlights are turned on (with xenon or LED's) and they are split left and right. So the functionality may exist already. Maybe, maybe not

Unless the feature is present in the module, the functionality won't be there. It's definitely not present in a North America 2016 F23 228i.

Ok, Some progress made but not all the way. Unfortunately it will only work if you have two Front Lighting Electronics FLE(43) and FLE(44) Left and right headlights respectively on ESys. I have an LCI with standard LED headlights.

The section that sorts out the mapping for the Turn signals is called BLINKEN_Idx

And there are various mappings when the indicators are turned on and this one is the default in the UK

These are the other possible mappings for the F30's as follows (from CAFD Viewer)

03, 03, 03, 03, 03, 03, 03, 0F, 03, 03

01, 01, 01, 01, 01, 01, 0A, 09, 01, 01

01, 01, 01, 01, 01, 01, 0A, 05, 01, 01

00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 0C, 00, 00

00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 0A, 00, 00

00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 04, 00, 00

The ones I made most progress with are the top 3 and altering some of the codes in Bit 7 made the DLR rings glow brighter only when the turn signal was on and I also, at one point, managed to get the dipped beam on the side the turn signal was on too.

To be fair I'm guessing the mappings So, the key is in this HEX codes above. Now these mappings are variant specific depending on if you have a EU spec of USA spec and if you have adaptive or standard LED (may also work with F32 / F36 with xenon if you have the two FLE ECU's)

The guy to speak to would be dmnc02 as he solved the 100% brightness DRL with low (or dipped beam) on. I think he has a understanding of these code maps and may be able to help.

I'm going to try some more based on his work to see if I can progress but if someone else has an understanding of these maps too, that would be a great help.

Do you have E-sys? I'd really like to see the HEX coding in the FLE's

Would you be able to send me the CAFD_0000243C_XXX_XXX_XXX.ncd ?

I knew this was doable

I just found the X1 is based on the Mini and the CAFD I'm looking for is : CAFD_0000180B_XXX_XXX_XXX

Man I really hope you solve this one.
I have posted this request for the .ncd file over at the X1 forum.
Request for cafd.ncd file. http://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1307995
Hope I can get you some positive responses.

Thanks for all the help. It must be a MY16 F48 with the FLE modules and adaptive LED (maybe xenon too)

I hope so too but I fear it may be more complex. I've compared the two CAFD files but there is so much difference it's impossible to nail down the exact codings as the CAFD files are generic until they get programmed into a car against the factory order.

I've also placed a question on the 2 series forum HERE to see, first of all, if I was dreaming when I saw an F20 do this or not. If it is correct and they do dim on turn signal on a F20, the coding is almost interchangeable with a F30. Well, nearer that a X1 F48 which is based on the Mini Clubman

2016 x1 doesn't have Xenons as an option. Only halogen and then led headlights. The led headlights dims when the blinker is on. I do have E-sys and will be happy to copy the file but am out of town until Monday.

I'd really appreciate that. I take it you have the LED's?

I just need either one of the ncd files from the FLE modules, I think they are the same.

Yeah. Mine has the led headlights. They are designed differently than the ones in the 3 series and 4 series. Would be neat if you could figure it out. I have never copied files before. Can you leave instructions to do so?

It's real easy. If you have done some FDL coding then the ncd file for that module /ECU will be saved to your E-Sys folders

Connect to the car with E-Sys

Read from the Vehicle Order from the car in the top left box and activate the FA by right clicking on "FA" and click Activate FA you will get (active) next to FA.

Go to the SVT Actual Box and click "Read SVT" and all your ECU's will appear in the SVT box on the left.

Right click on the CADF file under the FLE tree and click "Read Coding Data". A little folder symbol will appear the the left of the CAFD and if you click on that a little yellow CAFD_0000180B_XXX_XXX_XXX will appear underneath.

A CAFD_0000180B_XXX_XXX_XXX.ncd file will be saved on your local computer where E-Sys is on you hard disk. In my case they are saved C:\Esys\Data\CAF

If you could PM the file, that would be fantastic

Might not just be coding.
Most BMW LED lights are made by Automotive Lighting, including the F30 ones, but the X1 ones are made by Valeo.
You can also see the difference in that they are Projector LED vs reflector LED lights.

So the function may be a Valeo one on the X1.

What are your FLE settings for DRL?

The three settings

POLI1_idx
POLI2_idx
POLI3_idx

Are the three settings on the headlight dial. (Auto, Manual side lights and Manual dipped beam) to dip the DRL's when the headlights are on. They are set bit 7 to 05 which is HEX 2E or 46% brightness)

Correct since (in this case) DRL, POLI, and PL are all the same light source with designated function mapping for each distinct mode of operation. The way I understand BLINKEN is that it's solely for the LED front turn signal if LED and BLINKEN_PO is for vehicles with an LED turn signal and accent light section of the position light sharing a common light output area.

The cars that do dim the DRL have a common feature: LED headlamps with halogen turn signals. With these, the turn signal function isn't controlled by FLE, but by the master lighting control unit. If there is any way to enable this, I'd suspect it's going to be found there.

That's really helpful information. I have the LED turn signal and accent light. I've asked bmtespar to assist. He has the dimming feature on his F48. I've asked for the ncd files from the FLE it might be of benefit to get the FEM. I think it may be called BDC_BODY on the F48 (based on mini F56) to see if there is anything in there.

There is a common parameter in FEM and BDC cafd that may be something to look at. Search for "off_mode" and find the FDL lines associated with the front TAGFAHRLICHT. This is stated as an inverse PWM dimming for DRL for when the activating dependent is off (for indicator blink cycle). If this does lead somewhere, there are a few more settings that may need to be adjusted.
