Looks to me like the top protective coat has worn off. A new knob is generally the easiest fix, although there are leather repair methods involving sanding and retouching that could be tried if they're expensive or unobtainable. That said, there's also a chance it's just built up grime considering how shiny the leather looks. I might try giving that knob a good cleaning with some leather cleaner first.
