I haven't seen any forum posts, videos, or write-ups on someone changing their oil pan gasket. I wanted to make a little post on my experience doing it my self yesterday and how difficult the job was. I was going off of limited stuff just manuals.
Here is what I used to help me in this project. https://documents.dinancars.com/d120-0585.pdf https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...-sump/IOMxrMk4 https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...-sump/KEMtrw9z https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...-sump/Id7E7uAF https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...ump/1VnYoqdGAy PARTS: BMW Oil Pan Bolt Set - Rein 11132210959 BMW Oil Level Sensor O-Ring - Elring 12617604790 BMW Oil Pan Gasket - Genuine BMW 11137600482 Harbor Freight 1000 lb. Capacity Engine Support Bar Engine Tow Hinge part #72157070643 When changing my oil one day I overtightened the drain plug and stripped my pan so instead of taking it to the dealer and paying an arm and a leg I decided to tackle the job myself. I have no lift so all this was done on jack-stands. First thing I did was remove all the underbelly pans and remove the one etorx on the steering linkage. I then started to disconnect the coolant line on the swaybar and the electronic steering wires. I didn't really know if I could remove my control arms and drop the subframe so instead, I decided to unbolt the shocks and everything along with it. I removed both calipers and hung them up with zip ties then proceeded to disconnect everything that could get snagged when lowering the shocks. Once all that was done I removed the 3 bolts on each of the engine mounts and put on my engine support bar. I lifted the engine until I could freely move the engine mounts a little then started to unbolt the subframe. There are 6 bolts holding the subframe up then 2 bolts at the front holding the front of the car to the subframe. I just removed all of those bolts while a jack was under the subframe supporting it up. When lowering the subframe I was not able to drop it completely because my steering linkage was getting snagged so I lowered it by almost a foot and put it on jackstands. I started to tackle the oil pan and this was the most painful job. You have to remove the left engine mount from the car to get access to all the bolts on the left of the oil pan. Once you remove all the bolts you slide the pan foward a little then drop it down. When putting everything back on you have to toruqe to 8nm and 90 degrees on some bolts and 180 degrees on others. This was extreemly hard to get a torque wrench in all places so I just guessed on the ones I couldn't access. Overall I really didn't think it was much of a hard job but it would take you about 8 hours or so in total to do this if its your first time. I am 17 so I am not really that skilled as many other people so you guys could probably do it faster then me. Last edited by chaseb9; 07-25-2020 at 10:30 PM.. |

Thank you very much for posting it. With Xdrive and the front subrame to be dropped...
I really don't know if I want to tackle it myself or just get the shop next door to do it. My gasket is leaking and it is annoying me, I think I will get the crankshaft bearing replaced at the same time, that way this will give me piece of mind. I wonder if anybody made a kit to baffle the oil pan better.

Does that include xdrive? I don't believe so and I'm not holding my breath. About to have my oil pan checked and likely new gasket before I go fbo.

I am going to try Motor Oil saver from Liqui Moly. I will put 1.5 can in my N55 and see what happens. If I can fix the oil pan leak for $10 instead of $1000 I will be happy.

That's unfortunate. BMW dealers have access to a kit to fix stripped oil pans.
It's not the helicoil kit.

Do these oil saver products ever actually work?

Reading some reviews (lots of leaking BMWs) it helps. I figured out that $10 is worth a try. You are supposed to drive it quite a bit to see if it works.
I will report back in many miles. Worst case, I get the subrame dropped (time for sway bars) and get the gasket and bearing replaced. BMWs do like leaking oil from all orifices... The newer the engine the worst it gets and harder it is to fix.

This is unfortunate as it is a big job to get the pan off, and then you are right there (almost) to get the bearings out, especially on the earlier cars without the upgraded bearings.

Unfortunately it didn't. Time to get the gasket changed.

Did not work for me either. I had read good things and it's cheap, but it made no difference.
