F30 - 328D - XDrive - Catastrophic ZF8HP Transmission Failure

My recent issue: My 2014 BMW 328D X-Drive purchased from a local BMW dealer in the GTA (Ontario, CA) has just fallen out of warranty, as of July 2018, has encountered a complete transmission failure, which I will now have to address through a full rebuild or a full replacement. The transmission is stuck in limp-mode (fail-safe): with gears in 3, and on occasion on 5. Driving from a complete stop yields terrible gear slippage. I was advised by my trusted transmission specialist that my transmission needs to be rebuilt (or be replaced with new).

Anyway, what's obvious now is the poor quality monitoring on behalf of BMW and it's agents, and of course ZF's (BMW's Transmission supplier) QC given that my reasonably owned (I have babied this vehicle), BMW-only serviced vehicle, with a mere 90k (just out of warranty) 4.5-year life, now requires a critical repair/replacement of a major component. I even paid for BMW's own multi-point inspection (at my purchasing dealership) prior to my warranty's end, which showed no issues with the car.

I'm so disappointed with this "ultimate driving machine," with major components failing unreasonably too soon, regardless of what measures I take. I feel powerless and am stuck footing the bill on such a critical component, outside what would reasonably be deemed as a reasonable mechanical life cycle. This vehicle was only ever serviced by BMW dealerships in GTA. All records have been maintained. Not sure what more I could've done to anticipate such a mechanical quality failure at only about a length of time and use of approximately 10% out of the end of warranty. I really did not expect this with BMW on this day and age. Can't see me in another one of BMW's products, not after such a catastrophic failure. :*(.

Can't blame you -- I'd be pissed too.

Just curious:
  • Have you had the transmission serviced at all?
  • Were there any leaks or seepage?

I feel your pain. But it can happen with any car. Mechanical things can fail. That is why there are so many posts here about extended warranties with some arguing for them (to protect against your kind of experience) and others arguing that you are better off banking the funds to pay for repairs.

You can try to get BMW to provide you a courtesy adjustment on the cost given how relatively new the car is with so few miles on it. If you try, remember that you can get more flies with honey than with vinegar.

This is the first case of ZF8HP failed that I remember reading on this site. Very sorry for you, but this is deferentially not norm.

It's not unheard of for a dealership to wave the labor in a situation like this. I'd have a respectful conversation, and bring bmwna into it if the dealer doesn't respond positively.

Just asking, didn't you feel anything bad coming from the transmission before all this happened?

Transmission failure

I have a similar issue. Mine is also a 2014 328d with 100k miles. All of a sudden, the car won't move in reverse or drive. It will jerk violently and make a loud winding noise. I got it to move in drive but wouldn't come out of first gear. Drove it slowly to non-BMW service center down the street but it's beyond their capabilities. They think something internal to the transmission is broken. BMW is about to announce a transfer case recall on this model. Any chance this could be related?

I tried researching the recall, is it only for the Deisel, not Injection?

Recall Number
20V185000
Recall Date
03/26/2020
Component
POWER TRAIN: DRIVELINE: CONSTANT VELOCITY JOINT
Summary
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2016 328d xDrive sedans and 2013-2015 328d xDrive station wagon vehicles. The constant-velocity joint which transfers power between the transfer case and the rear drive shaft, may become damaged, possibly resulting in loss of power to the rear wheels.

Consequence
A loss of power to the rear wheels can affect vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the vehicle is parked after a loss of power to the rear wheels and the parking brake is not engaged, unintended rollaway can occur, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

What Owners Should Do
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the constant-velocity joint and inspect the transfer case, replacing it if necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin May 18, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Mine is the diesel version. Do my symptoms sound like they may apply to this recall? In other words, would the failure to the transfer case cause vehicle not to engage in drive or reverse?

If your car fall within the recall category, then you should have the dealer check it anyway. If you mention recall, you should not be charge of anything.
