Broken/Damaged Driveshaft/Transmission

(Bmw 340i Xdrive) Sooo today while putting my car into LC my car built up the torque then suddenly heard a huge bang then a rotating grinding/banging sound occuring in the transmission tunnel area not sure if its the driveshaft or related to the transmission (pray its not). Should be noted i put new tires on today and they weren't slipping the way my previous set would. On previous set when putting car into LC the rears would slip while building the torque. Today the torque was being built and the bang happened where before the tires would slip.

Could be anything but I had some stuttering driving at low speeds (feeled like I needed new plugs) with my G12 M760LI (xdrive). Don't know the English translation but some part of the xdrive system is broken (mid gear shaft??). Replacement over 3.000 euros without warranty. BMW told me they are going to try if BMW wants to pay 50% of the costs lol.

With my previous F31 330D I lost transmission oil after changing, which led to grinding and bangang sounds.

Another one bites the dust. Most likely twisted the driveshaft and broke as many have already done doing exactly what you were doing. Aftermarket ones are being worked on

Maybe get under the car and look at it to see what's wrong. It doesn't make sense for the driveshaft to fail before you even launch, but that's just my opinion. If you're holding it until your rear wheel starts to slip then you're holding it too long anyway. Especially letting just the rear wheels slip with awd still enabled. You may have damaged something in your transfer case.

I don't let it slip, as soon as i feel the tires break i let off throttle and its only maybe a second or 2 of holding LC that it does that. I think it might also be related to transfer case wont know for sure till later today.

It turns out the gimbal and the hand-out is a weak point on the x-drive? Toyo R888R and 0/100 out of 3s not possible on B58? Sadness.

i've been running my xdrive on e30 and driving fairly hard on it for 7k miles w/o issues on MP4S on all 4 corners. I sure hope this doesn't happen. Already replaced a front half shaft when I tried to put on camber bushings on a lowered car.

whats the cost or part number on the driveshaft?

Using launch control is what does it. Brakes full on and power full on at same time = weakest component dies.
Prop shaft is a less expensive part, so rather that than a shattered diff casing or worse.

Don't do LC kids

Had this happen to a customer of ours. Made him a 1 piece drive shaft based on a Chevy 3/4 ton drive shaft. Quite a bit beefier than the 2 piece OEM version. His happened due to launching from a dig using launch control.

Is this only an issue with the 340i/440i or it is it just me? I swear I feel like I havent seen any M140i/M240i post about this issue.

A lot of things play into it but primarily weight and traction. Their cars are lighter, can't run as wide of tires, and majority of them are rwd. Also I believe they have shorter axles/driveshafts so that should make them slightly stronger just based on the geometry.

However if you pay attention to the A90 drag guys, they all literally bring spare driveshafts to the track just because so many of them have broken them when running slicks on prepped surfaces. So it all depends on the setup.
