335i vs 340i as a daily driver

Hello guys,

I've been thinking lately that I want a daily driver car such as the 335i or the 340i and have my M2C be the fun car/weekend car because after 6+ months of living with it, I've come to the realization that the M2C isn't as practical of a car as I wished it would be lol. I carry around a big ass electric scooter and I have to fold down both of the seats to fit it in, and I pretty much can't really fit anything in it lmao. I also don't like how much gas my car drinks and how small the fuel tank is! I'm planning on keeping the M2C for a long time so I also don't want to be putting 20k miles a year on it haha.

So, that brings me to the question: Is the 340i worth the extra however much over the 335i? And before someone says "get a 320/328/330," no. I had a G20 330i and that's the last time I'll ever buy a 4cyl BMW. It was fine but I want my daily to be reliable yet fun.

What are some common issues on the N55 and B58? I know that the B58 has a water pump failure issue (two of my friends with M340i's blew their water pumps with less than 30k miles, albeit they were tuned) and not really much else. I'm not familiar at all with the N55 platform even though I have a S55; is crankhub an issue on the N55 as well? If it is, I may just end up opting for the 340i...

Anyways, everyone's input is appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: I also plan on modifying the car if I get it, stage 1 at most, nothing crazy. ~400whp would be my goal.

Get the 340i the B58 is great plus you get the LCI goodies. As a daily the Executive package with the 270 degree surround view cameras is super useful. Throw in a stage 1 tune or the MPPSK and it will sound wonderful.

I had a 430i before I got my 440i (with MPPSK) and I agree the 4 cylinder cars aren't peppy enough.

The 4cyls are only good for getting newcomers engaged with the brand/for people who just want to rep the brand/don’t really think of cars as more than a method of commuting. Once you get into a straight 6 BMW you can’t go back!

Agreed. The inline 6 is their bread and butter. The 430i was my first Bimmer lol. While having the 4 cylinder and learning more about the brand (much thanks to this forum) an upgrade was required.

The 330i was my first car as well. Honestly I was originally going to get a F32 440i or a G20 M340i but just decided to go full M haha

The M2C is a very nice car! You simply skipped some intermediate cars in the upgrade process lol.

B58 340i all day long!!! Your report of water pump failures is the first I’ve heard that. I feel like failures associated with tuned motors are too indicative of a widespread problem.

F30 n55 main issue is oil starvation if you track it, other than that, ewg 14-15 is the best year, it’s more reliable and has better top end. To get 400whp, just need FBO and stage 2 e20/30 mhd or bm3 tune. It’s fairly reliable motor, crankhub isn’t really issues unless you go over 600whp. I went with n55 ewg because it was $10k cheaper, it’s also my daily. If price is close b58 definitely easier to achieve more power, f3x b58 will have 450whp FBO on e30 tune vs 400whp n55, both platforms will need upgraded hpfp to get more power.
