This may sound dumb, but I tightened some of them, loosened them and re tightened to ensure the 17ft lbs. Could that have impacted it?

Should not have any impact. I guess its possible that one of the sparkplug washers may have failed (I've never experienced it) and some fuel vapor is venting. Pull the ignition coils off and check inside with a light to see if you see any fuel pooling or a strong gas odor in a particular plug.

This was one of the most organized and informative posts I've seen, so props to that. Very thankful for the info (my turn for plugs and coils), but have a bit of an off topic question.

My 1er's valvetronic motor has failed, and I've searched the internet with the hopes of finding a good DIY. So, any links, advice, etc., would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John

I've got the same issue unfortunately. Changed 6 plugs on my N55 engine, now I got that damn gas smell in the cabin during idle. No smell with auto start/stop operating when the engine cuts off, and no smell (as far as I can notice) while driving.

I've retorqued all six plugs, no difference it seems.

Should I be tightening to spec with a torque wrench using a universal joint attached to the extension bar? I heard that may throw off the actual torque values.

It's driving me crazy, sure would love everyone's opinions on this.

Have you solved this? Fuel leak sounds bad. Perhaps you should check torque on the fuel injector lines? One of them could have been bumped a bit loose. Any gas smell when you sniff around the engine compartment? Hold a cigarette lighter near for a better look... wait... no, just kidding!

Seriously, I’d like to know. Two people having the same problem is worrisome.

AFAIK, it's not recommended.

Nice. I'm sitting on a new set, waiting for my next day off to swap em. Did you change the gap at all or just go with how they came?

Out of the box straight into the Head. I'm literally stock (just a remus axleback).

.... For now

Sorry to bump a little bit of an older thread here but wanted to confirm the approach people are using with respect to using a universal joint. After seeing a few threads recently about cracking the spark plug insulators (and other consequences of doing so), i am wondering if people are using the tools as follows:

3/8 torque wrench --> extension --> U joint --> thin walled socket.

This seems to be what the manual is stating to do, see attached photo.

Thanks, nice writeup, bookmarked for when i tackle this job in the near future.

Just to confirm, you torqued them with the ujoint in place as i described? Were you not concerned with the Ujoint affecting torque spec?

Correct. I torqued to spec then gave it a tiny smidge more. No problems in 2 changes.
