Default to radio preset mode?

Before a recent software update, if I chose "presets" via the "mode" button on the steering wheel, it would show preset stations in the HUD when I used the thumbwheel to scroll through stations.

Now, it shows the mode of the station currently playing; if I'm listening to FM, it shows FM stations, not the presets. Same with satellite.

Is there a way to code presets as the default? I've checked the cheat sheets (and, of course, iDrive menu) and can't find anything.

I believe if you use a radio station that is chosen from the preset list it shows the preset list. If you chose from the FM band it shows stations from the FM band and the same for DAB.

That's not what happening. If I choose an FM station from the preset list, the next time I use the thumb scroll, it shows the FM band, not presets.

Apparently I'm not the only one with this problem. From the UK regional forum:

My hud shows all channels in my area. It also tags whatever is playing at that moment. I am not able to tell what station is what so I just use the presets in the dash. The steering wheel radio channel controls are worthless.

You can toggle to presets through the MODE button. I only listen to NPR and satellite, anyway, so I prefer the HUD.

I have a similar issue. I always leave the iDrive and thus HUD in Preset mode. My presets are a mix of SiriusXM and FM (NPR). Every so often, seemingly without any pattern, the iDrive and HUD will default back to the full FM station list. I then have to go back to iDrive and select Presets to get back where I was.

Unlike the OP, if I select the FM station from my preset list, it will not change the HUD to the full FM station list. But it does happen occasionally??

That's the way it's been for several years with BMW.

I have a 2013 and the istep was updated in July of 2017. It experiences this behavior now.

It’s inconsistent at best. Sometimes it shows the last selection, like presets. Other times it shows satellite or AM. This is on a 2018. I’m glad I’m not alone.

I've had this happen on my 2017 340. Dealer "updated" or reinstalled software (after 2 separate visits to reproduce) and it solved the issue. I would just bring it back and have them reinstall the software.

I may have found the solution to my issue with the HUD.

I removed the thumb drives I had plugged into both USB ports. Now it stays in preset mode after the car is parked and restarted.
