2016 320i X-drive excessive oil consumption
Hey guys,
Posting about my 3 series, 2016 320i X-drive. Car has 39k miles. I have had no issues with it up until about one week ago after an oil change I noticed I had to put in 3quarts of extra oil over the last week. Took it back to the shop who did not see any leak and I do not see any leak on the street. I do however notice significant smoke coming out of the exhaust on cold starts for about 10-15s with resolution subsequently. No CEL, no knocking and no other problems when driving the car. My brief research has pointed me toward a turbo oil feed line? Is there anything else you guys think it may be before dishing out money for that? The only confounding factor is that it started after the oil change which makes me want to believe it was an error during the oil change. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. |

The problem with the turbo oil feed line is documented in SI B11 16 15 dated September 2015: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...76478-5448.pdf
In summary ... - When parked, engine oil may leak past the turbo charger exhaust side turbine seal - Oil feed line should be replaced with a newer part number: 11 42 8 648 368 - The updated oil feed line has a check valve which will eliminate the engine oil pressure equalization (the root cause) Is your car by any chance under warranty? |

Even if your feed line is leaky you won't go through 3 quarts of oil in a week. I suspect you were under-filled. Keep an eye on the oil level, but don't panic.

"For model year 2015 or 2016 vehicles sold or leased by an authorized BMW center on or after July 1, 2014, the BMW Maintenance Program is provided for the first 4 years or 50,000 miles whichever comes first." You may not have the maintenance plan that covers brake pads and oil but it should still have the manufacturer warranty which should cover this.

The warranty transfers with the car. If you’re within 48 months of the original in-service date you would still have warranty.

Don’t assume it’s not under warranty. Unless you like to throw money away. Contact BMW and find the date the car was put in service. You may have warranty left. Don’t waste time. The clock is running.

I disagree. Call any dealership, give them your VIN and find out for yourself.
