I know the integrated exhaust header (turbo feeder) is new for the Supra version of the B58 (B58B30M1). It is water-cooled and supposed to improve efficiency and warm-up times (hopefully we won't see people fitting in "performance" thermostats to watch their temp needle sit lower).
The F30 340i has a conventional header not water-cooled. Other than that, I'm not sure there really are many differences. The Supra B58 has a forged crank though I think all B58s have that. All B58s have very good potential for tuning, IMO. Some are saying the integrated exhaust manifold might hinder tuning, but I'm not so sure. It should theoretically be easier/cheaper to install a larger turbocharger. BMW already has quite a few versions of the B58, even with the same rated power outputs. |

That's some interesting stuff! A water cooled exhaust header?? That seems not very beneficial |

Makes a lot of sense to speed the warm up phase from wasted heat. Getting oil and coolant to temperature as fast as possible, helps both efficiency (less frictional losses) and emissions. With the latest heat management, using heat from the exhaust is another tool towards more efficient control.

I know alot of people myself included were like "This is not a real Supra" its just a BMW and obviously im here because Im a big BMW fan. I feel this is only gonna bring out more tuners for BMW's, More Parts and better options for us as BMW Fans.. If anything the Toyota guys are the ones ticked off, Steph Papadakis is a legendary & phenominal engineer / racer / engine builder.

Does the Supra version have valvetronic? I know BMWs have a traditional throttle body but I thought it was at WOT in normal driving conditions is that the case here since he talked about throttle by wire being faster than your foot suggesting the throttle body opens and closes like a normal drive by wire system. I want to see if he can make the worlds first 1000 HP B58. Doesn't seem impossible since I believe there are M55 and S55 or maybe B58 upwards of 700 HP. The S58 is already north of 500 HP stock.

Great video! It doesn’t look like there’s a tappet between the cam lobe and the fuel pump. It also doesn’t look like a roller system. I’m already getting cam follower flash backs from my 2.0t FSI Passat! The design on the rod bearing caps is really cool how they’re “broken” so they get an exact fit. Really looking forward to the rest of his series on building the B58.

There are some distinctions here. Like the integrated exhaust manifold. The F30 version of the B58 is the B58B30M0 and the M1 is only used on the latest BMWs. The M1 is only used on the very newest refreshed BMWs. No F body cars, and even not on some older G body cars.
There's no way to know if Toyota made any modifications though until they actually remove and strip the motor down. Also, Papadakis is a legend in import tuning and 2JZ tuning. It'll be very interesting to see what he does with this motor. |

Can a B58 crate motor really be purchased from BMW directly? Would love to swap one into the F31, but knowing the cost of a new motor and all the fixings needed would snap me out of my dream.
