How much have your rates jumped pre-Ukraine war to now? Where I live in the US the cost per kWh jumped 57%.

As Watsey said, UK energy has gone up around 100%. In a variable market it's hard to be precise but, a few years ago I was paying £1200 pa for gas and electric. Now the monthly debit is £202, so over £2400 pa.

Looked at my bill from Dec 21. Standing charge 13.5 p/day unit rate 16p per kwh. Electric consumption 500kwh. Total £84

Now standing charge 57p per day unit rate 28.5 and the same 500kwh would cost £160

Ie as posted above double.

Oh yes, happy with that

I'm at 16p blended. Needless to say £0 spent in the last 4 weeks @the pump usually would be a £500 a month at least.
Yes, all great if you can charge on cheap tariff during the night but if someone works nights ? No alternative for day cheap energy tariff.
I have look at every company and they do not offer anything cheap for charging ev during the day.
I'm currently will shell but they will be taken over by octopus.

Similar for me. Monthly DD used to be £102, increased to £250 at peak (Dec 2022), now £223. I'm on Octopus variable, charged according to annual/12 per month.

I think there's a 10p anytime rate with some provider but I'm afraid you're just bucking the trend as a night worker, its the Demand and Supply classic.

No company will offer a cheap rate during the day. Wholesale electricity is priced in 30 minute units and these are higher during the day and lower at night - just supply and demand. Tariffs which offer low night time rates are there to incentivise use when wholesale prices are low.

£387 monthly d/d here, up from around £200 a couple of years back. We did run a much cooler house last winter versus previous ones.

We are paying £250 per month currently but in a new house so it's a bit of a guess atm. Current usage is around 400kwh of elec per month, not sure how that compares but feels relatively high. Gas pretty low over the summer as you would expect.

I understand this but in most ev tests they brag about cheap charging/cost efficient but it works if you work days. To top it off, my or missis work place hasn't one either and we do 100+ miles per day which is "challenging".
Hopefully whole energy market will go back to some kind normality soon.

To be fair at 30p kWh it’s still a fair bit cheaper than D/P. Not 7.5p though nope.

Looks like October might be a small dip too as wholesale reduces. I’m thinking 6-7p

Energy conversations go round and round. Growing up in the Northeast US there were always TV commercials trying to incentivize people to switch home heating from a home tank full of delivered heating oil to clean natural gas piped in from the gas utility. It was cheaper than electricity too! (Coal was the precursor to oil heat for many.)

Now there are commercials in my state by our Governor promoting that people should get rid of environmentally dirty natural gas heat and switch to clean electricity to heat their homes. (Electricity is still more expensive.)

I looked it up. My state produces about half of its electricity by burning natural gas! But we are individually supposed to spend thousands to ditch our natural gas furnaces for new electric furnaces in our homes- and then pay higher monthly energy bills.

Eventually there will be super efficient solar panels and super efficient battery storage so the big energy utilities can go F themselves!

Hoping for quick transfer shell>octopus as it looks promising and some decent prices.
30pkWh it is ok but 2h window for charge does not give much charge per day when car sits on driveway

OUch!

I am 650 quid in credit so currently only paying £50 a month! That will increase as I reckon based on last year and new rates I should be paying £200 a month for 12 months, so I'll up the payment in next month or two to keep it sensible all year to August 24

I think it's unlikely that the energy market will drop back to the levels of a few years ago when wholesale electricity was £40-50 per MWh. At the peak it hit over £600/MWh (although consumers were protected from this by government intervention) and has since fallen back, but longer term forecasts expect £100-150/MWh as they are currently, to be the norm. That translates to a domestic unit price of something like 30p per kWh.

There is a government review, REMA, to try and decouple electricity prices from gas prices, but that's a complicated matter given the interconnected nature of the market, which requires European agreement and is likely to take many years to implement.

Just agreed to having a smart meter fitted, thought I’d best get with the 21st Century & I just can’t be arsed to send monthly meter readings anymore.
Bill from 6th August to 5th September is £94, once I get the smart meter I’ll be able to see how much electricity the various items use & what savings can be made

Just to show Agile is not always good here are our prices for today. Still a lot of time slots under the price cap but expensive in early evening, maybe time to switch to intelligent for the winter.

I get where you're coming from. It's a valid concern about the fluctuating electricity prices affecting EV running costs. I remember when I was researching EVs, I had similar worries. One thing I found helpful was keeping an eye on trends and forecasts for energy prices. Websites like smarterbusiness.co.uk offer great insights into managing energy costs effectively. Plus, investing in home charging solutions and exploring off-peak charging options can help mitigate those concerns. It's all about staying informed and being proactive.

Fossil fuel prices fluctuate and are likely even more unpredictable amid concerns about CO2 emissions and rumors of depletion. Electricity, which can be generated from wind, solar, and potentially nuclear fusion as it advances, feels more stable to me for the future. Recently, I've been researching the electricity price market. About two months ago, when I acquired an electric vehicle, I noticed that almost every supplier offers a dual tariff for night and day usage. Typically, the night tariff ranges from 7p to 10p per kWh, while the day tariff is around 32p per kWh, and is enough to allow for approximately 180 miles of travel each day on the night tariff charge alone - which is about £5. Can you ask for more?
