2013 F30 335i Front Brake Pad Question
Hi all,
Could someone tell me how I can get my brake pads out from the caliper?(See photo below)? Do I need to punch the pins through on the two holes shown, thus releasing the pads? Also what are those "clips" highlighted in the red rectangle? Ive change brakes on other vehicles before, but never on one with Brembo brakes. Thanks, Dennis |

Yes, use a punch to knock out the 2 pins from front of caliper, then grab the tabs you have highlighted & pull the pads out.
To install new pads, you will prolly have to use a caliper piston spreader tool to retract the pistons back in their bores to make room for new thicker pads I use the Lisle tool which works great on our 4 piston calipers to retract all pistons at same time - with this tool you will never have to remove your calipers to replace pads - after pad removal this tool can fit in opening of caliper where pads where and it ratchets the pistons back very easily: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-lisle-pa.../lis29100~lis/

This spreader is also available at ToolDiscounter at about half the price: http://www.tooldiscounter.com/ItemDi...ookup=LIS29100

the above posts are correct. Be careful when punching the pins out as the metal clip will go flying. The spreader is excellent and is a must for really any brake job.

On single piston calipers there is a cutout in the outer wall of caliper that allows straight on application of clamp between rear pad face and rear of caliper housing - no so on 4 piston caliper housings there is no access from front On these pad spreaders the paddles can fit down in thru the slot in housing then ratchet back both front/rear pads at same time - even while the caliper is still bolted to car - so no need to remove caliper at all

Wow, i see why that tool is essential!! Let me run the steps back. 1. Knock out the top and bottom pins of the caliper. 2. Pull on the tabs, which should pull the existing pads out. 3. Use pad spreader tool to push pistons inside the caliper. 4. Install new pads, and reinsert the two pins into the calipers. Sounds about right? |

Don't forget to pump the brakes after replacing both sides - that will move the pads back against the rotor - so no surprise 1st time you hit the brakes & there is more travel than expected

I've got a 2014 F34, and my 4yr of no-cost maintenance ran out just before I needed front brakes... So I'm doing the job myself for the first time on this car. (I've done brakes on all of my other cars, but they've all had single pistons and none of these infernal pins)
I had the Front Passenger wheel off today, and I could not get the pins out of the caliper. Granted, I didn't know about them ahead of time, and the sun was setting, so I tried to use a nail and a small screwdriver with a hammer with no luck. What size drift punch should I use to get these pins out? Also, should I lube up the pin before putting it back into place? Thanks! |

Should you remove some brake fluid (an oz or 2) before you perform a brake job. Ive seen a video and the mechanic in it did this. It seems to be a fairly straight forward job. Thanks

Bringing this post back to life because I would also like to know what the silver tabs are on the brake pads.
I got some new pads in today and one of the tabs fell of on 2 pads and I’m curious if I should send them back for a return or just use them. Any idea/suggestion? |
