Sorry to revive and old thread, but has anyone else had any luck with a solution to this?

Can anyone help with this? The details that OP posted are 100% identical to mine besides the fact his car is tuned. This hasn't affected drivability for me at all, and I noticed it about a month after I bought the car last year, and have put 20k miles on it since. I want to mod this in the near future though and would feel more ease of mind if I solved this first.
I know its a old thread and my X5 35i is long gone but this was the EXACT sound my N55 in the X5 had.

Curious to know if you ever got this fixed?

Alan

Surprised this is not more well known, BMW actually replaced quite a few N55 engines over a $5 part. Answer is resonance vibrations along the HVAC hose. Buy part # 64539322952 and 07129952119. Install it 300mm from the crimped end of the rubber hose as per SI B64 01 14. Drove me crazy for a few months after I got my car until I installed this. If you have that weird ticking/buzzing noise at ~2500 rpm under acceleration, it’s 100% this issue.

Thank you, was there a particular way you were able to diagnose this? Or anything to look for?

It's your fuel rail. Simply put, the stock rail makes a native ticking noise, and gets louder if you take the vanity cover off. And even louder if your running ethanol, I mean allot louder. There is nothing to be concerned about. unless your trying to run E85 with no blend or tune which is death, obviously I can assume your not.

AllThat said… An N55 stock fuel rail req is 1600 psi at idle a d 2800 psi top end of your running E30. If your running pump 91 or 93 no tune, your rail psi should hover around 2200 psi. Again completely normal. But Higher the pressure louder the tick.

Again this all completely normal, every N55 owner has this issue, most just don't pay attention to it, or they don't mod their cars where they can't ignore it. For example, I'm running stock fuel rail, on MHD Flex Fuel, E40 blend (max blend for fuel rail stock system) full bolt ons. With a carbon fiber OEM replica hood with the vanity cover and foam removed for ignition system and vac tubing space. And my car has 95k miles 550 WHP and I drive roughly 200 miles a day, run data logs to verify health and the car is bullet proof to-date.

Essentially your good bro, don't stress the, N55's are built to do this rail tick. Lastly the Bmw dealer just wanted to get some labor, by blaming your healthy turbo, so they can charge Bmw factory for the work.

Jumping on this thread to share my 2 cents. Bought an x5 n55 with full MPPK used. From day 1 I could hear a ticking noise from 2500-3000. Took back to dealer they were able to easily replicate it. They ended up swapping the engine for a brand new one. Guess what? Noise still there lmao.

Hopefully this thread will help others especially if they are out of warranty.

Any chance having it resolved?
