Also, what must be done to light them up like the rest of the steering controls?

Thanks.
Its possible the're not offered in black anymore. You cpuld ask a buddy with an m3/4 that swapped his out for another color. I have to check again if mine light up
So do they?

Does anybody have an update for this? I'm thinking about installing M1/M2 buttons in my F32. Would love to have the functionality like a M car!

Unfortunately I no longer have the car. I know their's a guy on instagram who is also in the process. @alpine.n55. He claims he will have them working soon. Currently just has the physical buttons installed like I did. Good luck!

Hey everyone. I started working on the project a few months back, but what's currently holding me back is that my current module I'm trying to tap into the CANBUS with isn't working properly, along with the buttons not being clickable. The actual buttons are there on the circuit board behind the plastic buttons, so if someone can figure out how to get the plastic buttons gliding properly then you can get it clicking on those buttons which should theoretically send a command to the CAN. What I plan to do is sniff that command and execute my own function via third party hardware. For example, I have an aftermarket exhaust cutout and would like to open / close it with the steering wheel.. that is why I originally started this project. Some time down the line I will continue it

Anyone see this?

Wondering if this would be useful to intercept the dead button signals and do something with them.

Watching this post. I have the F8x steering wheel coming with the M1/M2 buttons. Would love these to duplicate the eco/comfort/sport/sport+ rocker switch function found on the center console of my F30 340i.

So I have some good news, it is possible to do stuff with these buttons, but not by just replacing the empty buttons. You have to retrofit a variant where they are already build in, like ACC variant. You can often find used ones fairly cheap..

So after that I was able to finish my project, I wanted to have original M1 and M2 button functionality. Plus I use some other button on the steering wheel for flap control.

It's for 5 and 6 series, maybe if someone is interested check it out:

+1.
Reading your post has brought hope this may be a reality for the F3x range.

Have looked up the part number you mention, 7849406, for the buttons and found a seller in Lithuania who can do a complete new button module with M1 & M2 buttons on the left module where many people have blanks.
https://vinicart.com/products/new-bm...ontrol-buttons

Would like to know whether you would be willing to produce some kits of your project?

rcaso26 this is actually not for F3x series, but would definitely be possible... it takes days or weeks to reverse this stuff and build a module like this. Since it's going to do stuff with the gear selector this gotta work correctly!

Techno 9000 there is also a part number that already contains M1 and M2 buttons, but I was not able to test that version. But in theorie that should also work..

Sure i could produce that, but I have no F3x to work with. So at the moment only for 5 and 6 series.

Thanks for the update. I'm sure you would get a lot of interest if you set this up for the f30 in the future.

Jeezz....... this looks great. I agree that an F30 version would be well rec'd by all the guys on here. My brother has an F13 this would fit so a few key questions.......

How much does it cost for your current kit?

Basically what has to be done to fit this to the car? Is it DIY or specialist fit? Please cover fitment using steering wheel with M1+M2 and also using cruise control roller.

Any recommendations for places to buy the M1 and M2 buttons? Who had a good experience with fitment and who had an issue?

There are plenty of places where to shop and they are almost made by the same MFR, even if its a different seller though.
Only to obey is, if you wish the illumination through the buttons or not, aside from that feel free to buy. The change is easy done, but requires removal of airbag.

At the moment they do not click down properly since I need grease for the plastic. Once I get them to seat, I will be tapping into the contacts for the buttons and soldering them to the connections for the open & close buttons on my exhaust cutout remote.
That wast original plan! I ran into the same issue. A little dielectric grease should do the trick. Keep us posted
My plan as of now is to tap into the canbus. I'm hoping that the buttons built into the steering control circuit board will still be sending a command even though the buttons are meant to be blanks. If they do and it's unique, I'll be able to make this work.
Do we know if there is light source under the blanks?

If not how do we get it?
There are points for the leds on the circuit board but they are not installed. All you'd need are 2 SMD leds
Has anyone added LED's to the board so the M buttons illuminate? Does a DIY guide or video exist?

I was recently shown these: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000517639542.html

They are Audi start/drive logic buttons made as a mod to retrofit onto lower model Audi's.. however they've begun selling them for BMW's too. They also offer another version with an exhaust button and a launch control scroll toggle too.

I'm tempted to buy one to try and reverse the workings. My biggest goals are start/stop, drive logic and an exhaust button to control my aftermarket valve

This is their installation guide, the problem is it's all in Chinese.. but it describes exactly how they use the existing harnesses to control start/off button and the drive logic control.

Good news.. I just came across a guy on a Facebook group who's made an entire kit that sits under the blanks, you insert the included M buttons and plug all the harnesses together.. it allows you to control the drive logic modes via the buttons.

I have shared this thread with him so hopefully he'll drop some details shortly
