Carly: The ECU cannot be accessed. Please restore this ECU.

Hello,

I recently got the Carly app and wifi gen2 module for my 2014 328i. I coded a few things and they worked perfectly. Then I went into CSM and tried to deactivate the seatbelt warnings. The app made a backup which I sent to myself, then threw an error while writing the code and was unsuccessful.

I currently have the "Passenger restraint system" error displaying on my dash and screen. When I open Carly now and "check coding possibilities", under CSM it says "The ECU cannot be accessed. Please restore this ECU". When I try to do that the backup does not take and I get "Codings could not be written. Nothing has been modified in the vehicle." or I get "Unfortunately the backup could not be restored."

I have contacted support who suggested doing the restore, unplugging the battery for 20min, clearing any faults, entering expert mode, and restoring the CSM module.

Nothing has worked and I cannot get the restore to take. The restraint warning will not go away either. Any help/suggestions is greatly appreciated!

I've attached the screenshots.

Here are the CSM backup files. All other modules I worked on (FEM, IKHA, KOMBI) only attached 1 file for the backup, not 3...just wondering if this could possibly be a problem?

Look like you damaged your ASCM ECU...

You should get ESYS.

You're going to need to get E-sys and use that to restore it from there which is something we can also help you with remotely. Either that or you can take it back to the dealer and have them re-flash the ACSM without mentioning that you attempted to use Carly to code it.

Okay thanks!

I'll probably just go the ESYS route. Is it okay if I shoot you an email?

This evening I just got into the same situation trying to make some changes to the KOMBI module. Carly support has suggested that I go the dealer way.
Now the question is do I need to tell the dealer to Reflash my KOMBI? Or they should be able to find out if I don't want to refer to the Carly coding I attempted?

Isn’t that a bit crap that the Carly app has allowed you to get into this situation and all they advise is to take it to the dealer? I’d be happy with that response if the app had cost me nothing but having paid for it I’d expect more.

Hey sorry for the late response. Carly did end up making things right I'd say.

I paid for a remote coding session from CodeMyBimmer (highly recommend) to avoid the awkward conversation with the dealer.

Carly then contacted me for my receipt and reimbursed me for the remote session.

Everything is now working as it should.

This has just happened to me . I can't believe they let these things happen.

What's the best thing for me to do at this stage ?

Get it restored with someone who got ESYS.

If you like I’dd be happy to do it for you remotly.

You do need to get the ESYS software and a ENET OBD cable.

I once used Carly - now only Bimmercode for this exact reason. My E92 FRM was fried by Carly. I haven't used it on my F30.

Got the same problem. How did you fixed it? Did you had to change the FRM? How much is that and can I do it myself?

Hum, sorry to talk on a very old post, but i got the same problem.
I tried to disable the seatbelt warning with carly on a friend F30 and got EXACTLY the same problem.

I've picked up Esys / Enet cable , i'm now downloading the very very long psdZ file.

Could somebody assist me with the acsm reflash ?

Thanks a LOT

Unfortunately this happens often with Carly.

But there's no need to flash and so you don't need the "very very long psdzdata".
You only need the psdzdata Lite (5GB), assign a new CAFD and code the ACSM.
That's all.

Did exactly the same earlier tonight.

Carly app couldn't restore the backup file on first try so it recommended the following

So I disconnected the battery and went inside to google it.
Found this thread and thought i was FU---.

But I followed carlys recommendations and it actually worked to restore from backup on my second try.
