2019 440i mppsk muffler rust

Got this car a week ago and love it!!

2019 440i xdrive mppsk 6mt

Car has 27000 km. Just wondering if this rusting is normal for the m performance exhaust?

I would definitely call that abnormal.

Yes that isn't typical. Almost feels like someone had the exhaust off the car sitting in a wet corner. 😱

I have had mine for two years and it does not look like that. Is it surface rust that can be cleaned off? If so, maybe that can be done. I clean mine now and then when washing the car - hose it off after a brief scrub with a soapy brush.

///M exhaust isn't stainless?

That shouldn't be happening in my mind.

Definitely some surface rust but I didn't think it looked normal for a m performance part. Makes the car look like trash from behind.

Dealer said they would look at it when I bring it for an oil change in June.

It's supposed to be stainless. That doesn't mean it won't corrode, it will, but at a very slow rate and it won't look like that. These days anything that can be counterfeited will be. For instance: https://www.sc-project.com/en/fake-exhaust/

Makes me wonder if they took that from like a totaled vehicle and installed it on yours somehow

Mine looks nothing like that either.

Here is what the original MPPSK exhaust should look like, in case there are any irregularities you can spot.

That is a good point. More pictures.

A few more suggestions. Do the valves operate correctly when in comfort vs sport mode? So they should both open on sport mode and only one will be open in comfort unless over 4000 rpms. Are there lots of burbles and pops in sport mode when you wind it up and then get off the gas. This is how my mppsk works.

What size are the exhaust tips? Are they official m performance silver or CF tips?

Since the tune is done by a bmw dealership or at least officially by bmw it will have been recorded. I got lots of bmw paperwork when mine was added with verification of my tune. Also as part of the tune was a change in the max HP and TQ readings on the sports dials when you select for them in idrive. I can confirm that my max values changed to account for the higher hp and TQ values.

Definitely not normal, as already established BUT:

- It is normal for the middle section (where you have most of the rust) to get darker (yellowish) in time (or rather with mileage). This is due to the middle reaching the highest temperature. Mine has slowly started showing that as well

- As you may guess, humidity plays a HUGE role here. I live in a humid environment and my pipes are lo longer stainless steel -grey.... they now exhibit some rusty patina. The muffler does not however.

The sport and comfort setting work perfect. Lots of pops in sport etc.

I'll get some more pictures up and let the detectives try and figure out what's going on here.

I bought the car from a bmw dealer so I assume that it's all legit parts... But seems like they might have been made on a Monday or Friday

My best guess is that the car has been spending a lot of time in a very, very humid environment. Maybe a heated, but humid garage.

I’ll bet Rust-Oleum makes a silver metallic paint. You could try that.

I'd say younger now in the „normal" range. I still believe your car has simply been subjected to high humidity / salt.
