I've done full to full then crunched the numbers. My on-board is 1.2mpg out and can easily get upper 70's on a run. I've even been into the 80's after 500 miles of a return trip between Newcastle to London. I got far better mpg after realising £20in the tank was better than a fill. I did the journey on under £40 when fuel was just over a pound per litre.

My sure this lux will do better than an ED diluted model

I wish I had time lapse to film the dials over a few hours

330d Touring was my conclusion as one of the best all-round vehicles, while driving the E91 330d. Add a panoramic roof and it is also as near to an open top as you can get in a practical package.

I see the 330d sDrive as the ‘sweet spot’ in the range, particularly for high mileage. xDrive has its place, but with compromises, when RWD attributes are key.

I'm on my fourth 330d, the last three being Touring, and love them. X-Drive has its benefits but personally I prefer RWD as it keeps the drive interesting. Throw-in some enhancements and it is a very good all-rounder that can really push-on.

Absolute fuel economy doesn't bother me, and my long-term average of 37mpg over 55,000 miles is absolutely fine given how i drive.

Then I have a round trip for work of 200 miles in the 330d and it does over 50mpg!!! What other car performs like it does abs still delivers the economy when needed.....

The next car has very big boots to fill!!!

Unless you really want or need X-Drive I wouldn't bother with the 335d; what you'd gain in performance wouldn't be worth what you'd sacrifice in handling and economy (the standard X-Drive doesn't handle that well IMO and 4WD does also make the fuel consumption a bit worse).

Given you're a petrol head I would say the 340i is more likely the way to go. On long motorway runs it would still give high 30's or perhaps even low 40's and the noise and refinement are on a different level from the diesels. A 140i would perhaps be more fun on the twisty bits but if you're doing a fair few miles I think the 3-series probably offers a better blend of performance/comfort/refinement....

Have had a good read through all the comments and I have to agree that ideal world the 340i is where to go, but maybe a map on the current 330d ticks all the boxes......

I would not buy a diesal car again. 340i gets my vote.

Actually that's a good call as well if the OP fancies the 35d engine but doesn't want X-Drive; the added bonus is the 5-series interior is much nicer and the car will also be more refined on long runs than an F3x.

Depending on budget perhaps a 640d GC may be worth considering as well? However, both assume the OP's annual mileage is high enough to merit another diesel; wouldn't even consider one for less than 18k/annum personally....

Yep, it's a lovely engine and suits the 8 speed ZF box well. I've had three BMW 6cyl 3l RWD diesels (all Tourings) and they've all been brilliant.
Am currently driving a 440i GC, which is equally brilliant
