Esso 99 Ron rival to Shell Optimax
https://www.esso.co.uk/en-gb/fuels/petrol
99Ron with additives plus you can get nectar points so might be worth a look. |

Have to admit I was using Shell vpower until the last few months but then flipped to Costco premium with a shot of this stuff and can’t say I have noticed any difference apart from my wallet...!

It's been out for a while but isn't available in many fuel stations so far if you use the search function on the website.
I've been using Tesco 99 Momentum over Vpower - cheaper and honestly can't feel any difference.

The reason I posted this is I am going to be frequenting my local garages more often again so was looking for alternatives to propping up the local Shell garage profits. I used the Tesco stuff many moons ago in my TVR and it did make a difference, there isn't one near me though and same with Costco. The Petrol/Diesel about has long been settled at least... |

I happened to look last night for stations to fill up whist in North Wales next week and spotted that in North Wales, Devon, Cornwall and parts of the North their super unleaded is still 97. My fuel preference is currently 1) Esso 99 2) Tesco Momentum then 3)Shell V Power |

I stopped using BP when they got rid of Nectar and switched to Esso.
I have to say the pops and bangs are a lot louder on the Esso stuff than in comparison to the equivalent Shell product. BP are behind the game on the forecourts in comparison to Esso and Shell. They used to do 102 but stopped that a few years ago. The best they offer is 97. If you want 102 you have to go to places like Silverstone to get it now. It's something I can't believe no one is doing on the forecourts anymore. |

I once filled up at Silverstone with some 102 - can't remember the price exactly but it was BONKERS!

Is there any performance difference between these 99 fuels if you are running BM3 stage 2? ie is Ethanol content preferred?

I know that V Power and Momentum 99 are interchangeable with my Impreza's map by Andy Forrest but wouldn't like to say about others. At the time he suggested staying away from BP super as while it was 'super' in that it was 97 RON at the time, he said when mapping it behaved like a 95 RON fuel with the way it didn't improve det. Up north I use Gleaner as it's usually all that's available but as they can't confirm what the RON is on it I put in a bottle of Millers booster in with each tank. Compared to how it runs when using known 97+booster I suspect it's either 98/99 (Shell provide their fuel) but in the absence of proof I prefer to play it safe.
Is the BM3 mapping arrangement custom tune, or generic flash software? If it's custom and it's been done with a particular super then I'd ask the mapper which ones they recommend as they'll know from experience how different fuels behave. However, if it's a generic flash then I suspect it'll be a lot less fussy as there should be more safety built in. Last edited by Ennoch; 05-13-2021 at 05:45 AM.. |

Well I filled up with Essos finest last night which I imagine will be exactly like Optimax. I do remember BP super was a waste of time and was actually noticeably worse in my old TVR.
Annoyingly it was the same price as optimax so only really bonus is the nectar points. |

I've been using Esso 99 for the last few tankfuls; the nearest Shell garage to me is quite a lot further away and the other local station selling a premium fuel is BP (and, although I've used Ultimate a few times, I'm aware it's not as good as the likes of Optimax or Momentum). In truth I've never been entirely convinced by the performance claims that go with a lot of these premium fuels but I'm prepared to believe the additives help to keep the engine cleaner and, as I view my existing car as a keeper, I'm willing to pay the extra.
That said I'm quite relieved I'm not a high mileage driver who needs lots of the stuff as at my local Esso the Synergy Supreme appears to carry a price premium of 14p/litre over the normal stuff. That's over 60p/gallon and, as I'm one of those old enough to remember petrol being less than £1/gallon, that seems a lot! Don't remember the premium for Optimax being as much as that but could be wrong? |

Too true, when I was a lad there was none of this self service and the bloke would fill the cars up for people, lot of poeple would inc, the old fella, ask for fuel in gallons. 4 gallons of 4* in a National petrol station was ....£1.48 You could also get 5* fuel ! Funny how some things just stick in your mind.
