Steering wheel leather peeling

Curious to get opinions on if this should be covered under warranty, still under factory warranty.

2017 330i steering wheel leather is flaking and peeling off at the top. Car is in perfect condition otherwise, don’t use any harsh cleaners, garage kept, 27k miles.

I’m taking it in to the dealer in a few days and expecting they will try to blame it on me but seems like an issue with the leather. My last BMW I had for 14 years and the steering wheel was perfect until the end.

Would be helpful to hear opinions, especially if you have had luck or tips with a similar issue.

I'd guess, they'll replace it.

What state are you in - assuming a hot, sunny one?

I'm in Georgia, but I keep it in a garage and it's almost never out baking in the sun.

That's not the leather, it's the coating that's there to protect it. It's a simple matter to strip it all off with acetone, then re-dye and re-treat it with these:

Once fixed, I'd recommend using a sun shade over your windshield and regular application of a quality interior protectant to all the interior leather/plastic/rubber. Those two things will do wonders for preserving the interior of your car.

I had the same experience. I had taken the car to the dealer for an oil change (under warranty( and the SA saw the condition of my steering wheel and immediately said he would order a new one. I was living in Utah at the time so the car was exposed to very hot temps during the summer.

Highly reccomed this for said protectant for both inside and out. As a sealant, cut my labor time in half

That product is for paint protection, not interior. I've used this for the leather in our F22, including the steering wheel - CarPro CQuartz Leather:

I'd be OK trying it on hard plastic surfaces & trim, but I'm holding off on using it on seating - just my opinion. We know the proliferation of detailing products has gotten nuts & we can't/shouldn't need them all, but I'll have to try this on a "friend's" car first!

Nuts is right!!

When I decided to up my detailing game in addition to regular waxing twice/year, found both Pan and the guy i posted. Followed Pan for awhile but after watching his video on "maintenance wash" I stopped. Just too much and products too pricey. I wanted to be able to walk to my local Autozone and get most of what i need. Meguiars Fast Finish has been a game changer at least for the exterior, I will say.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, I WANT YOUR CAR WHEN YOU'RE DONE WITH IT! NOT JOKING. EXACTLY WHAT I WANT NEXT IN A FEW YEARS

Hand sanitizer and hand lotion can cause this.

It is at the dealer now so I’m waiting for the final call from them to tell me if they will cover, but the SA said he anticipates they will cover it under the warranty. He said they evaluate the interior fully and take that into consideration. If it is in very good shape, it will work in my favor that this issue is an outlier. Will post the final resolution.

Just got confirmation from my service advisor they are going to replace the steering wheel under warranty! Didn’t give me a hard time about it at all, very pleased with the outcome. Appreciate the advice here.

Just got my car back with the new steering wheel installed. Took a month to get the part but was fully covered under warranty. Looks great.

I've recently cleaned my 2015 340i which I've just purchased, I cleaned the steering wheel with autoglym leather cleaner and it seems to have worn I'm not sure whether this is the case or if it's just where the dirt has been removed if anyone has any ideas I'd be grateful thank you.

Were the marks there beforehand?

"Worn" leather in this case should look/feel smooth and less textured like the sides and bottom. The top of my msport wheel looks just a little smoother than the sides, due to how you tend to maneuver the wheel.

Nice...looks like not only did they replace it, but it looks like they upgraded you to the Nappa leather wheel over the original 'some kinda leather' one. Huge improvement.

No there wasn't anything when I bought the car and I've only had it 11 months, It's not longer smooth to the touch in the affected areas.
