Had mine done last week
2016 420d GC

I was initially sent the letter last year in November for it to be checked.

Completely forgot to call up and book at the time. Then Covid happened and all their garage were closed for a while.

Finally booked in last week and was replaced. Dropped off at 9am, ready to be picked up at 1pm.

I'm getting the EGR cooler replaced today on my 2017 430d. The car hasn't had the EGR valve checked/replaced but I checked on the BMW site last week to find that it was showing an outstanding "technical enhancement". Called the dealership and they said it needed a new cooler, not sure why I wasn't contacted by BMW though? :

Just had mine done at Cotswold BMW
F31 330d 2015.

had ERG cooler replaced and EGR Valve. From the two service videos they sent me they pointed out a small bit of cooler leakage (small bit of greenish crust) from a previous check (not done by them).

all god so far

UK F31 320d EGR latecomer - recall query

For the UK guys please:

My 320d was getting the engine light and drivetrain error 'Drive Moderately' message, with power automatically reduced, limp home mode.
My mechanic's diagnostic showed the EGR needed replacing (or words to that effect).
The car is a 2014 and mileagy, and long since out the dealer network but is serviced by a specialist BMW independent and at the required intervals.
I have never recieved an EGR recall letter or notification. So before I spend good money with my mechanic:
1. Am I able to approach a BMW dealer and ask for recall work to be done?
2. Am I entitled to do so, or will they say - no as it's not been serviced by us?

Grateful for advice
Many thanks

So my experience of the EGR issue now fills me with horror having just read this thread, I was unlucky enough for it to fail and cause a fire.

I bought a 2017 F30 320D ED as a BMW approved used car in late August 2019. No mention of any issues with the EGR by the dealer at the time of purchase and I never received any recall letters from BMW, so I was never aware there was any issue - but clearly at the time I bought the car, BMW were well aware of the problem!

In January 2020, on a really cold day, I got a low coolant warning (briefly), but the warning went away after a couple of miles as the car warmed up. A few days later, before I had time to get the garage to look at the fault (and still oblivious to the symptoms of EGR failure) while driving along a country road, white smoke started pouring out the engine bay. The car was recovered to the dealer, and coolant had basically leaked onto the manifold.

All fixed under warranty, including new manifold, engine cover and EGR parts. But after the experience, I got rid of the car and now have a G20 318D - I am left wondering if it will be next!

Have since had the EGR replaced on my 2017 Mini Clubman Cooper D also, after the dealer called in June last year to ask if I could bring the car in for a quick check, "nothing to worry about". Yes there was, exactly the same problem, but luckily no fire this time and fixed under warranty at no cost.

My car is a March 14 build F30 335d. The EGR cooler was replaced in Dec 18 with approx 42500 miles on the clock at the time.

Simply, no, can't remember if its had one or two mot's since i had it deleted, but there have been no problems whatsoever. Also the car afterwards was so much smoother, i appreciate the ecu re-adapts and goes back to normal soon after that. But since i have had it done, there has been no loss of water from the header tank and no loss off power occasionally whilst accelerating hard.
I know its not for everyone, but i have had no problems.

Mind my ignorance please.
I have a 13 plate 320d, 75k miles, when I enter my reg number on the website to check for recalls, it says there aren't any.

How is this possible if other guys in this thread with similar age/model cars have had the EGR recall done?

Am I better off contacting my local dealer?

Cheers

Not every car is eligible for it. I would theorise that they have an idea of what batches of EGRs are susceptible to problems and have determined yours should be fine.

That said, if I was in your situation I would contact my dealer just to see what they say.

My EGR failed. I said that should have be done in recall. BMW did the parts for free, but I had to pay labour...
