Given that it looks like the UK may be almost alone in having vaccinated its population by the summer, so foreign holidays may be out, perhaps we should arrange a forum NC500 drive...
Count me in, I promise not to use all the performance so you 5 second guys can keep up

Although I might get a towbar fitted and bring my brothers caravan.....and keep Quantox company.....
Bah, everybody knows Audi horsepower isn't a match for BMW horsepower.
Exactly!

How's the new motor anyway, weren't you due to collect this weekend?
I love it, thanks for asking. Picked it up yesterday and so far it's matching my expectations, which is rare!

G series interiors are just such a step up, especially when going 3 series to 5, love the refinement. Can't imagine what the 8 is like, which incidentally would definitely be my choice.

I'd say the only thing I want to change is the power. Coming from a mapped 30d, it feels ever so slightly flat in the mid range. It has a good slug of torque early on around 1500rpm then doesn't really build on that til maybe 4000rpm, I think a remap will sort that.
Sounds great, don't forget to post some pics

I had an M5 before so gave up 25% of my BMW HP, but much prefer the Audi as an everyday car... not as fast and to be honest the RS4 is nearer M340i than M5... but its not about numbers its about ownership and driving....

Enjoy the 540i, to me that is the optimum 5 series.

I think I'd bring the 440i, no towbar on that. With the MPPSK I might just keep up with the 5 sec. guys.

That might be something to try given the stats for both are 4.1 secs 0-62mph.

Although I would have to learn how to switch on launch control to do that!

Well I have just placed an order for one

The BIL is now the proud owner of a Dravit 4 door much like JD6's and at 52k it seemed like too good an offer to miss.

My 2 door coupe arrives end of March and the cherry on the cake is that I got £39,500 for the M2.

I love watching people who can't reverse, especially if it involves a trailer

Nothing like the pressure of people watching.... I remember stopping at some services on the north coast road in Wales and taking a wrong turn and ending up in a deadend with a caravan on the back.....and having to reverse it into a couple of parking spaces (with a grass verge behind) to turn round....no pressure!

Which would you take? To me it's a no brainer, I'd take an 8 every time.

And yes I realise that's full retail for the 4 which you'd be crazy to pay, but I'm just using the displayed figures for comparison.
Based on the 640i GT experience (which is very similar), I'd agree that the 8 is a no-brainer. No issues with the size at all, especially with all the parking aids.

It's massive step up in quality, refinement and driver experience.

I think the widths of the two 640i and 840i GC are actually quite close - the 8 coupe is the same as the 6GT and the 8GC is 30mm wider I believe. I think you have quoted the 8GC with mirrors and the 6GT without.

Agree completely about the huge step up from a 4 to an 8.

Sounds lovely. The standard kit is really high to start with so I'm sure that will be a great car. I guessed 840i in your previous car thread!

OK confession time. In one of my many mid-life "reliving my youth" moments I bought a Laser dinghy. Towed it home and after several attempts at reversing onto the driveway and mostly ending up in the hedge, I gave up, unhooked it and pulled it by hand.

Turned out that with my knackered back I was equally crap at getting back in after hanging off the toe straps so that's another hobby that lasted about five minutes.

For those who haven't tried reversing with a trailer, it's tougher than it looks! I have only tried a trailer on my ride on mower, so thankfully I could make an arse of myself in the privacy of the garden.

I have more respect for articulated HGV drivers now!

The two key factors are distance between towing vehicle rear wheels and the wheels of the trailer, and the friction generated by the wheels of the trailer...

So an artic is theoretically easier than a camping trailer and the one on your ride on mower should have been really hard...

An 8m twin axle caravan wasnt too bad, and certainly easier than a camping trailer in my experience!

Spot on, Ian. In a previous life I had a Class 1 HGV (as it was) when agency driving between careers. The longer the trailer, the easier it is. When doing regular deliveries for high street stores, all the drivers dreaded getting certain drops where a 40 ft trailer was too long, so a 30 ft trailer was used ,which took a great deal of adjusting to. Kept the license going while the requirement was just for regular medicals, but once they added in the need for a CPC as well, it wasn't worth the outlay.

It has everything I need JD6 and then some, I just played around with the look of it really. My Son dared me to go for the 'Crystal Clarity' as he found it highly amusing when I had it on the 850i

My BILs car is very similar to yours, I had a nosey over it last week and the interior really is 'special' and at low 50's even after adding my options it only represents 15K on top of the M2 Comp.

Now the proverbial purse strings have been loosened I think it is time to keep an eye out for a stable companion

I drove a coach one on one of these driving experience days, way too many gears to choose from!

I was ok at reversing, having to get a 8m long twin axle caravan between two stone pillars at the bottom of a gravel drive and straightened up without putting the car through the terraced house the other side of the unadopted lane I was turning off was a good way to get good quickly! It really was a case of a couple of inches spare at both sides as caravan pivoted in and at the front of the Jeep near the house.... Amazing how when you are young you think you can do anything, these days I wouldnt dream of it and would take it to my Mums or brothers to wash and load it!
