Thermostat - extended warranty?

Hi all,

Got a CEL on my 2013 328 with the error code P0597 - thermostat. Looks like there's a warranty extension in the states which covers it for up to 10y/120k miles. Found this thread: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1363900 . Though, looks like it doesn't apply in Canada.

Well, just checking, has anything changed since last year? Anyone been able to replace the thermostat under the extended warranty?

Thanks,
Ravil

Interested as well, did you end up getting it repaired, or did you do it yourself?
How much did you pay?

Got mine CEL on Thursday, interested as well; I read in other thread that doing the Water Pump at same time is advisable; if you did get the fix recently, did you include the WP? and if so, any out of pocket cost involved?

I ended up paying for it, as I figured it is not covered by a warranty. $195 for labor and $265 for parts at a reputable shop.

Got my coolant thermostat replaced from the dealer. No cost to me and Im "out of warranty."

There are A LOT of parts covered for A LONG TIME if you own an SULEV.

No. Why, are you guys completely exempt from SULEV warranties?

vinzcast21 do you mean that the it's covered by the standard new car warranty, or that it has extended warranty on the thermostat alone (like those in US) ?

sspade from my understanding, BMWNA manages US and Mexico, whereas BMWCA manages Canada and this means that we often get less features in our vehicles and many of the warranties that you would get in US, we do not get. This includes the timing chain extension for N20/N26 motors (from my research, that warranty doesn't exist in Canada). Similarly, this thermostat extension doesn't seem to apply to Canada either.

I don't know this for sure, but from my (very limited) knowledge, most of the 28i engines in Canada are n20 and not n26, so many of the N26 SULEV specific warranties wouldn't apply either way.

I had my thermostat just fail at 44,000km on my 2014 328xi and right when my warranty expired. Dealer refused to cover it and email with BMW canada was fruitless. Now the passenger wiper motor failed, it just seems like this car is falling apart even though i babied it all its life. I’m very disappointed with BMW Canada and never buying one again whilst i live in Canada. surprisingly the engine is in very good condition given all the bad rep the N20 receives.

Dear Mr. xxxx:

Thank you for your reply.

Please note that BMW Canada and BMW United States are completely separate and independent entities; any recalls or extended warrant campaigns issued by BMW United States are not automatically applicable to Canadian-specification vehicles. Dear Mr. xxxx:

Thank you for contacting BMW Canada regarding your 2014 BMW 328xi. We appreciate your inquiry.

Please be advised that at this time, our internal records indicate that there are no outstanding recalls or warranty extensions for your vehicle. We will notify you in writing if an applicable recall is released in the future.

It is important to note that BMW Canada provides a manufacturer's warranty that is valid for four years or 80,000 km, whichever should come first. This warranty is in place to cover any manufacturer's defects during the warranty parameters. Our records indicate that this coverage expired on April 26, 2018 for your vehicle. Once the warranty period has ended, any necessary repairs are the responsibility of the owner of the vehicle. We sincerely hope you can understand our position in this regard.

If you have any further comments, please reply to this e-mail or contact the Customer Interaction Centre at 1-800-567-2691. Again, thank you for contacting BMW Canada.

Thumbs up Had same thermostat error - replaced by warranty

Hi guys, I had same issue a few weeks ago and they replaced my thermostat for free - so it looks it should be covered by the warranty (btw, I am located in Calgary - so works for Canada).

Note:
The car: 2014 320i xdrive BMW (F30 / N20) - still under the warranty
Thermostat failed @~42.000 km

If the thermostat failed while you are still under the new car factory warranty, then it should to be covered in Canada.

However, in the US, their customers get an extended warranty on the thermostat for 10 years (iirc). As SSPADE mentioned, even when his car was out of new car factory warranty, he was able to get thermostat replaced, no issues. That is what we are missing in Canada ...a lot of the extended warranties/TSB/recalls that the BMWNA/BMWUSA gets.

I got my CEL light today at 84k for failed thermostat.

Reputable shop wants 2 hours labour and $265 for thermostat. Should I also do water pump while in there?

I am in Canada. Has anyone in Canada over 80k with no extended warranty on vehicle had their thermostat replaced for free after failing? It doesn't sound like it.

Thermostat is a $50 part. Buy one and pay an indy $200-$300 to install it. You might have to search for the right shop but its out there.

I just got mine replaced as it failed at 98,000km. Paid $380 at a reputable shop for an OEM thermostat from BMW. No issues with the new one so far.

Hey so did you get your water pump done as well no-charge? I just confirmed with Stevens Creek BMW (Santa Clara, CA) that thermostat is going to be no-charge. Made appt for next week. Just wondering about the water pump.
