I brought my car in to the dealer to have my door lock fixed since it was failing, and my CPO warranty covered it. Unfortunately, when they took the door panel off the tech found a mess. The window regulator was wadded up with grease or anticorrosion, it was a really sticky substance and now the door panel won't go back on right because it was jimmed up from the beginning. Apparently, someone else did work on my car before I owned it and screwed up the door panel and the window regulator. How should I proceed with this? The dealer has pictures of what the issues are.

Wow, what a mess...
If they certified the car like that and then sold it to you, I would assume it's on them to fix it since it supposedly was guaranteed to be free of issues when certified.

The BMW dealer i bought it from i have no relation with anymore because of shit like this. I use another dealer that is much better and have been really accommodating in my short year of ownership.

Politely ask the better dealer to fix the problems. Note that the car was CPO'd and you trusted that it had not been damaged like this. If necessary, ask to speak with the Service Manager and if she/he refuses, ask for a "goodwill" repair. If none of that works, you may have to go back to the selling dealer or perhaps call BMW NA, but either of those approaches is less likely to get results.
Be nice, persistent, and reasonable throughout. Good luck!

I don't know if that's a "nightmare" scenario.
Sounds like you need a new regulator, some clean up and a reinstall back to it's original design. It's not an especially complicated job. If your new dealer has been accommodating so far ask them to put together an estimate for repair then see if they'll cover all of it or part of it. Honestly, if it's a previous owner that inflicted the damage you'll probably be on the hook for it as it was a pre existing condition not related to the build quality of the vehicle and out of scope of a dealers reasonable expectation of it's condition. But your first step is pricing the repair.

In that case take this up with BMW NA. It was a CPO, and it apparently passed BMW's "detailed" inspection requirements for certification, so this shouldn't be your problem.

Sounds like the actuator is covered but a replacement door panel and associated labor is not.

Depending on the time, energy, and associated cost might be cheaper to just purchase a complete door from a wrecker. Search availability at car-part.com

I thought CPO cars went through a much more rigorous inspection. Sounds like just another dealer scam.

Ideally...but like most things, poor work ethic manifests itself from time to time.

With all that stated, OPs example seriously stinks, but would anyone have known if someone took the door apart, if at the time of the sale, the windows and door locks etc worked? I think this is the issue with CPOs. If it is low mileage and kept stock and never worked on at home, it might be great CPO, but if someone modified it and then took the mods off and or futzed around at home on something hidden it would unlikely be noticed during the inspection. Unfortunately then it becomes the problem of the new buyer. As stated above, hopefully the OP can work with BMW to make note of that fact (that someone messed with the car and that this is the CPO problem) and then in a good faith process can get the car fixed. Good luck OP. |

That's not how CPO works. Dealer has no way to verify that condition existed when it was sold CPO. OP is SOL.

CPO just means the car has it's required maintenance, service intervals, wear items are within limits (breaks, windshield, etc). That's the "Certified" in the "Pre Owned" of CPO.
CPO DOES NOT MEAN you get a as brand new car. You bought a used car, period. If you don't want potential used car issues, buy new. That's the only way you can 100% avoid situations like this. |

Read the fine print on BMW CPO, and the above two posters are correct. Trim and body panels are not covered under BMW’s CPO.
That’s lousy, really. The last two CPO cars I bought (different brand) absolutely would have covered that. They were basically a new car bumper to bumper warranty with a shorter term. Glad I didn’t bother with the CPO, turns out it’s not worth much. OP, I would still try to see if you could get a goodwill repair. Maybe they’ll try to help you out and not cling to the fine print. If that doesn’t work, you could try BMW NA as mentioned earlier, but I can guarantee they will hide behind the fine print. You may be able to find a used replacement on eBay or similar. Very sorry OP, crappy situation all around. |

OP, however the panel was on before, it'd go back..as long as you have a vapor barrier, working stuff behind it, and the panel stays on, sounds like it doesn't look damaged from the outside.
I'd have the rep. put it back on the way it was before...though you might honestly be better off figuring it out yourself before they mess something up. Good luck!

Alright everyone, so I don't need a new door panel but I found the selling dealer replaced the door lock on the passenger door before I bought it, so I'm going to try to see if they worked on my driver side door. But, the door handle where you pull the door shut has two parts, the finished part and then the backing portion where you pull; the tech thought it was all one piece, luckily it's not so I would just need to replace those two parts to fix that issue because both of those parts are just glued together right now. As for the window regulator just being glued in the door panel, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I'm sure the dealer will have some sort of excuse. I'm gonna post the pictures of what I was talking about.
