F30 N20/N26 oil filter housing gasket, need to remove intake manifold?!?

These two videos show the OFH cannot be removed as a back bolt is blocked by intake manifold, but the DIYer is able to remove the old gasket and install a new one without taking off the OFH.

This second DIYer did remove the intake manifold and a few items, does not look easy DIY!!!

This looks simpler than the other videos.

You don't have to remove the intake manifold completely, just loosen it enough to lift it about 2 inches up to get to that oil housing bolt.

The 2nd video of post#1 shows that without removing the OFH, the 2nd gasket can be sneaked into place, not sure if that can be done all the time though.

haha. that's cutting corners. I needed to pull completely off the OFH to clean it properly.

Interested in people's opinions/experiences on this.

Just noticed mine leaking a bit and will DIY next oil change.

Getting my ducks in order and plotting my attack...

I'm also wondering this actually...I have the OFHG and Oil Cooler gaskets on the way now and was assuming I would have to loosen the intake manifold, but if I can avoid that I'd be all over it.

After seeing a DIY thread I'm thinking maybe it's possible to do without removing/loosening the intake manifold, but maybe it's a pain and less of a headache to loosen it even if it's a few more extra steps up front? And you can just move around much easier so it's all around easier?

At any rate, I think to do without loosening manifold you need either an extension and universal joint, as I saw this mentioned in the DIY thread:
Quote:
I was able to get the bolt near the manifold by using a 1/4-drive Craftsman 8MM socket on a universal joint with a 6" extension bar.
Or an 8mm box-end wrench as this was also mentioned by more than one person...
Quote:
-You don't need to drain the coolant.
-You don't need to take out the airbox - just the piece that mounts onto the front with 2 hex/torcx/star screws.
-You don't need to remove the intake manifold.
-IF you choose NOT to take these things off (like I did) I recommend using a ratcheting 8mm box-end wrench.
Hoping someone can chime in though that's actually done it one way or another though! If not, I'll report back in a week or 2 once I get a chance to take a stab at it.

i just inspected mine, finger crossed, seem no leak yet, but based on my search is is a common issue with BMW. not only do they fail a lot, the engineer also sucked at designing it and forgot that they fail a lot.

Just about everything today is designed to make it as easy as possible, in other words cheaper, to manufacture, with little to no regard to how difficult it is to fix if it breaks. If you think a BMW is bad try working on a modern TV. Impossible.

After changing the gaskets, it’ll introduce air to the coolant lines, is there anything else that needs to be done? Purging the air out of the coolant system?

Yes, the cooling system should be vented after replacing the OFH and/or OFHG's.

So, I'm trying to tackle this one today, I've loosened all the bolts for the intake manifold but left them there so i dont risk losing any (to reach the infamous third torx bolt thats holding the oil filter housing to the block), it is still not enough clearance to fit my torx socket in there, any tips or do i just need to go ahead and risk loosing one or more of the intake bolts to give me enough clearance? Or is there an alternate tool I can get in there?

I did the same thing. Dropped the last intake manifold bolt. No where to be found. I have a bigger problem though. When I went to bleed the cooling system I noticed oil in the coolant reservoir. What do I do now? Is the gasket that I replaced bad or didn't seal properly?
Please help!

N20/26? Probably your gasket between OFH and heat exchanger. It is known to dump oil into coolant system.

I have a N26 motor. I just took it apart again cleaned the surfaces that the gaskets touch really good. I am going to flush the coolant and change the oil. I hope this will solve the issue.

That should cover it. Mine is holding good, no more coolant\oil leak from there. Super worth it DIY, despite how shitty it is.
