Thinking of Buying a 328d. Any Known Issues?

Hi,

I'm thinking about buying a 2015 328d xdrive with 32k miles on the clock as my new daily driver.

Just wanted to know what the common issues are with these engines. I was thinking of extending the warranty (powertrain plus) in order to have the transfer case covered as I've read about this being a common issue. I've heard timing chains are not an issue anymore with the US spec N47.

Any thoughts, suggestions or advice would be welcomed.

Transfer case. Some have issues with the N0X sensors as well from what I have read and some DPF replacements. All that being said I love mine. I have put 8k on it (currently at 41k) since I bought it in February. My commute is mostly highway to work 65 miles roundtrip and I have never had a tank under 40 mpg. Normally 42 - 46.

I love mine ('14 with 120 km/s). Fantastic powertrain, the N47 mated with the ZF 8 speed it's a great combination. Your 2015 may be the LCI version so transfer case may be the updated version however you should dig a bit deeper on that including build date, etc. to confirm. Don't expect to win 0-60 races every time, having said that it has intoxicating torque down low where you need it the most.
So far with the NA models - the infamous timing chain fiasco hasn't been a common issue nor carbon build up causing problems but time will tell on both.. Depending on the cost of the warranty I would go for it, I did and it just paid for itself (transfer case). Good luck.

Looking at the tail lights I can tell it's pre lci. If they do eventually replace the transfer case is it replaced with an identical part or the updated part?

2014 328d non-xdrive here with 90k miles on the clock. Only issue I've had was a nox sensor replaced under warranty.

It's an updated part yes I did verify with their parts department when I was there.

Thanks for all your answers guys. As of an hour ago I am the proud new owner of a 328d xdrive

I held off on the warranty for now because they were a bit pushy with their sales tactics so I just got the car at the price I wanted and got the hell out of there. Still have time to pick up an extended warranty down the road. 10 months or 15k miles.

Congrats man! Well for now - peace of mind you could always change the transfer case fluid.

Awesome, great to hear!

The car is actually at my mechanics now having an M3 steering wheel/air bag installed.
Couldn't go 24 hours without modding it
Will post some pics when I get the car back.

Nice. What's your cars spec and what else do you plan for the future? Last couple years have been interesting journey for me. This is the first car I have modified and it started small and snowballed.

It's non M sport, has 17 inch wheels, halogen lights...

It's as basic as it gets lol. It has creature comforts like comfort access and a sun roof and navigation but it's not sporty or aggressive at all in its appearance.

I have an M2 in the garage that I have modified a bit so I really don't have big plans for this car. This is just the day to day work horse and the M2 is the fun weekend/nice weather car.

I just changed the wheel b/c I really hate the thin and small stock steering wheel so I carried it over from my M2 (which has an M performance wheel) since I wasn't using it anyway.

But like you said, small plans sometimes turn into big ones so who knows...

Now I think that for project car to start with basic non-msport would be more interesting as there would be bigger difference between start of the mods and finish.

Mm M2 is great. I test drove M2 year ago and fell in love with it. It is great that you have your car to have fun with and daily driver.

Im thinking of M3 E46 as my fun car for weekends. They currently have good value.

Funny, I'm actually coming from an '06 Jetta TDI. It was at 190k and doing just fine till the timing belt snapped and bent the valves lol. Figured it was time to move on and get something a little newer/nicer. Very happy to hear so many positive things being said about this car, I love mine so far.

I have one as well. Mine is a 2018 with around 22K miles on it. Very good engine so far and very solid. Yes, it will not win 0-60 races but it is not slow either. On an open road you can see 140 MPH with no problem. 40 MPG while cruising at 80 MPH on freeway is also not a problem. As far as I can see so far the engine seems to be very very well built. Don’t know about the future but so far it has been trouble and maintenance free. I will change oil on it aroune every 4000-5000 miles max as I plan on keeping it for long term as a daily commuter. With the amount of torque this car has you only need about 25% throttle to accelerate and at 25% throttle it accelerated quite good in comfort mode. I put it in ECO mode once cruising on freeways or highways.

500-600 miles out of the tank is possible in this car if you are doing long freeway trips which I think is amazing. When I swap tires I plan on installing some Michelin PS4’s on it instead of the current run flat tires it comes with.
