Is is safe to pull out the MAF sensor?

Got a new intake and it's giving the CEL. Some people on forums say they pulled out the MAF sensor. I'm not sure if it will affect the engine.

I'm N55 but I've been running without the MAF sensor for like 2 years now with no issues.

I hope you guys are checking your air fuel ratios as a result. Car runs lean you will be in trouble down the road engine wise. How will the engine know how much air it is receiving on top of giving it the needed fuel to run proper ratios if the MAF sensor is removed?

How the fuuuuk can you run without an MAF... Engine literally uses that to adjust AFR.

I pulled mine out to clean it at 56k miles, but put it back in lol

Forgot to put mine back in after installing my dinan intake(yes I'm an idiot and got excited and wanted to drive). Car drove fine. No fault codes or anything.

It's just the sensor that is unplugged. With JB4 and Injen intake the car with sputter with the MAF sensor plugged in. With it unplugged it runs perfectly fine.

You guys do realize the 02 sensor controls AFR right lol. No AFR readings come from the MAF. It's just an additional sensor to fine tune the engine calibration, but the car still runs fine without it. It's just open loop operation instead of closed loop. You'll probably lose some efficiency but won't damage anything. MAP sensor + 02 sensor readings will send plenty of data for the ECU to run with.

im sure the engineers have considered a maf sensor failure and not allowed it to bring the engine to a standstill
so I am sure the DME is working around the lack of a MAF
perhaps it even has historic maf relationships stored who knows
but is it ok to tape up yer nostrils and breath thru yer mouth
sure you cant smell real well but ya can breath
but sometimes the smell gives you more input on whats going on
maybe not the best analogy but.. it serves the engine to know real exact maf readings.. its what its tuned for

No doubt, but i have done the same thing on prev cars when diagnosing issues. Also a lot of high power cars switch to MAP based tuning for simplicity. Nothings wrong with it. Just another sensor added by bmw to improve efficiency. A dirty/broken maf is a more serious issue than no maf at all.
