R.I.P. 330

Time to say goodbye to my much loved 330D.
She died peacefully after cutting out today at around 4pm and then basically cremated herself.
The insurance company say that they will take her away to her final resting place. Gutted!

Sad end to a decent example.

EGR failure? Has been the cause of other BMW engine fires.

Electrical they reckon as it kept igniting after they put it out until they disconnected the battery.
They basically put the fire out 3 times, but with the battery disconnected it stopped.

Source could still be something like the EGR system, or inlet manifold. Fire can cause an electrical short which adds to the problem. Experienced it myself with a Combined Harvester. We couldn't sort that out until the battery was disconnected.

It looks like the fire was concentrated around the inlet manifold, my first thought would be a leaking EGR cooler and the antifreeze igniting. How many miles did your car have out of interest?

Excuse my ignorance, I don't know what GAP is.
I own the car outright and my fully comp insurance will cover it.
Not sure I should be chasing BMW Assist though?

Thanks. Light smoke inhalation. Nothing serious.

I think the OP has a 2013 car so any GAP would have long run out (assuming he bought it new or nearly new).

My cars a 64 plate, which I bought for cash 15 months ago at 3.5 years old and put 3 years back to invoice on it, so I wasn't sure if he was in a similar situation or not.

I bought it privately in May 2018 and did a balance transfer to a credit card which I'm paying off. It was a 5 year interest free finance deal, which I will probably keep running so I can put the payout towards a replacement car.

No. Should I be worried that I didn't follow up?

How many letters have you received from BMW since the recall started?
I wouldn't mention it to the insurance, ..but will be interesting to see if you have a problem here or not.... hopefully not!

Agreed.
In the mean time I need to work out how to remove the half a tank of fuel and any other bits that the insurance company won't miss.

Finally got the car back at 11am last night as the RAC classed it as not urgent!
At least I can SORN it and get £100 in tax back. Looks ok from the mirrors backwards

The fire looks to have originated from the inlet manifold or very close to it. Did you have the recall done?

all a bit worrying is this !! .
mine is a 64 plate that I bought for cash , with no finance on it about 13 months ago .
also now has 80k on the clock !!!.
far too many similarities !!!!
mine has had the egr recall done so all parts will be warranted for 12 months so hopefully this is a bit of a safety net .

Ouch, sorry to see this. Just be thankful that everyone is ok. Hopefully your insurance will sort it all out for you painlessly. I was pleasantly surprised how reasonable an offer I got when I had a meeting with a Spanish HGV with my last car.

Make sure you get everything personal out of it when the insurance co take it away. I left a few things in expecting it to be repaired but instead it was taken half way across the country before I got chance to collect my stuff.
