almost immediate buyer's remorse on BMW 440 GC

GC was not in my original shopping list though. I was eyeing a 440 coupe for long time and once thought who would actually buy a 4 door 4 series. the May/June 2019 model close-out sale made me finally pull the trigger.
I thought good lease incentive wouldn't last long.
so I hurried to a nearby dealer and they provided fairly good discount. But there were only a few Gran coupe version 440 left on their lot, not a single coupe.

(understandable the coupe looks much stylish and cooler. and sells better. So at the close-out sale, only slowly selling GC left on their lot which not many people would buy here in California)

I thought this incentive wouldn't last long so I just picked up one of their leftover 440 GC with M sport package.

I didn't have a coupe on their lot to compare at that time. Around that time I though there might not be much difference between coupe and GC except for two extra doors.

But later on, when I saw a coupe parking not far away from my GC, I see couple looks way much better than GC. GC is like a combination of 3 series wagon and 4 series coupe design. but the combination result may be even worse than F30 sedan's look? I start to regret I should have stick to my original plan with coupe. The GC is so much less beautiful and cool than coupe.

the dings on the look of GC I found
1. smaller front door and tiny rear door makes it a little funny when door opened
2. worse side view from smaller front door window
3. lifted roof line makes its rear silhouette swelled and beefy, this makes GC more like a sport wagon, other than coupe, or like... a coupe that loses control of its diet?
4. fitting 4 doors into a body originally designed for coupe finally somewhat kills the overall look of coupe. all doors have to be cut shorter than normal. but a coupe should have longer sleek doors shouldn't it?
5. I just feel 4GC and 4 coupe are different cars. In my opinion, in terms of looking, 4GC looks closer to F30 sedan than F32 coupe. Maybe GC shouldn't have been placed into 4-series lineup?
6. overall coupe is cooler than boring sedan look of GC.

I don't really need "practicality" as single and no kids.

I find the Gran Coupe very beautiful, to the point where they should have replaced the F30 with it.

It's the GT that is visually displeasing to me.

Completely agree!

I have to convertible and sometimes I am jealous of the coupe and gc... when it is raining.

I think it looks like a beefier coupe. Look into getting a wing, diffuser and front lip. You can make it look nicer.

What colour did you get it in?

Look into changing the exhaust... with that noise you will forget the rest.

Yes, GC rear silhouette is beefier than coupe, like a better looking GT.

This GC looks better not sure if it is color or better picture shooting

https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...g=1019&slide=9

Mine is white and a lease. I thought of adding a rear spoiler
But it is a lease I am afraid those 3M glue is very hard to remove upon lease return.

So why did you post this? Just to complain? If so, delete it, as nobody wants to hear it.

Do you have a question you would like answered? What would you like us to say about the fact that you bought a car that you don't like? Do we need to call the waaaaambulance for you?

If you don't know the answers to these questions, then there's no reason you should've posted and ultimately have us waste our time reading it.

Give your GC some time. I bet you will like it.

I have a 2 door and love it. There are times when I wish I had a little more room. 2 sets of golf clubs and 2 carts is tight.

What's funny is the 4 door version of the 4 series is the highest selling variant. But I agree, it's pretty ugly. The proportions are all off from the side profile. If I needed a hatch, I'd much prefer an F31.

Its been almost 5 hours since you made your first post here (welcome) and since then I have been sitting, in the corner of a dark room, trying to find something good to say about the GC. But like you I have nothing good to say about it - it is indeed a disaster. It is for sure the Pontiac Aztek (look it up kids) of the BMW world. I wanted to tell you something good about the car but i cant live a lie...others here have offered you positive feedback about the car, but you and I know they are all lying.

I've seen this happen before and really the only solution is to give the car away - walk away, clear your mind and move on. IM me and I will come pick it up from you.

Please make sure you have a full tank of gas in it when I pick it up - that too will make you feel better

I like the look of the GC. I’ve driven one as a loaner for a bit and have seen a few on the road and at first I didn’t like the rear end, but then it grew on me.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I've always liked the look of the 4gc over the f30 sedan or f32 coupe. It looks nothing like the hunch back GT, and I highly suggest that the person who compared it to the Pontiac Aztec needs to have their eyes checked. The gc doesn't even look like a hatch back.

Ive always thought that the 4 series 2-door coupe looks ok, but also awkward to me. It's like the doors are too long. To me it's like they took a car that's meant to have four doors and forced it into a two door, and now you're stuck with these comically long, impractical doors. It just looks wrong and contrived. I think the same about every large coupe. A coupe should be a small car. By comparison, the 2-series coupe looks much better than the 4 series coupe, and worlds better than the 6 and 8-series coupes.

Anyway, you can try to open your mind to it, and see if it grows on you over time. Sometimes, when that initial anxiety from making a large purchase goes away, you find that the buyer's remorse does as well. If after some time though, you feel the same, the car will probably always feel like a compromise. I've been in this scenario before and ditched a car I wasn't happy with after having it for under a year. If you do this, make sure you can absorb the financial hit. You can also explore options like swap a lease, or whatever, if you leased it.

The lesson learned is to not compromise on the car you want just because a dealer coaxed you in with a good lease deal. This is especially true when shopping for a premium car. If you're going to compromise by getting a car you don't like in order to save a couple or few grand, why shop for an expensive car to begin with. Sure you saved a couple thousand, but now you're stuck with a car that you're not happy with. A small compromise, such as getting a different but still acceptable color, is one thing. Getting a model you dislike is another.

Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Both cars are good looking, imo, and yeh, the coupe has the edge. The 4GC however is the best looking 4 door BMW currently in production, excl M cars. Much better to my eyes than the new 3, and based on speculation and spy shots of the next 4, better looking than that too.
The 4 coupe has a slightly lower centre of gravity than the 4gc iirc although it's probably not perceptible in most driving conditions

I really like the 440. I bought a gorgeous '16 340ix and would've bought the 440ix in a heartbeat if they'd have been available.

Heck, I'd swap my 340 for a 440 now if it weren't for financing.
