With the 4 Series Coupe Concept being revealed to overwhelmingly positive reactions, the question on many a fan's mind is what the production version may be priced at when it hits the market in late summer of 2013. With its 4 Series badging, the coupe has now been slotted above the 3 Series in the lineup and the presumption is that the 4 Series price premium above the 3 Series will increase more than ever (the coupe has always been priced higher than the sedan).

BMW insider SCOTT26 has chimed in with this bit of early speculation:

"Now the advent of the 4er is here and aims to bring a more upmarket perspective to the 3er line. The 4er (in Germany ) is projected at just over euro 2000 more than the equivalent 3er Sedan."

For reference, at today's conversion rate, 2000 euro is equivalent to $2,618 USD. To put this rumor into perspective, for the 2011 model year, the E92 335i coupe's base price was $2,050 higher than the E90 335i sedan.

So, if Scott's projection proves true, we are possibly looking at a premium for the 4 Series over the 3 Series in the high-$2000 to lower-$3000 range, a not unreasonable increase over the price difference between the previous generation 3 series coupe and sedan.

As with all rumors and unofficial info, take it with a grain of salt, but we hope this to be true, so for now keep your fingers crossed.

For the rest of Scott26's post, see below:

Quote:
And So it begins... The dawn of a new era.

Many thought that BMW would not be so brave to cancel a successful piece of history as the last time when it came to the decision for the E92/E93 as a 4er they pulled out because of the M3 name.

Now the advent of the 4er is here and aims to bring a more upmarket perspective to the 3er line. The 4er (in Germany ) is projected at just over euro 2000 more than the equivalent 3er Sedan.

Although this a concept , like all BMW "production" concepts the 4er Coupe is 90% the production car. The stylish elements of the car will be reinterpreted for production the form and function will remain but the exotic detailing will be more realistic.

The Concept premieres at the NAIAS in Detroit this coming January along with the BMW M6 Gran Coupe which is imminent. The Concept 4er will also be shown at Geneva in March to gauge reaction from european customers.

BMW are keen to favour launching the 4er in production form at the Shanghai Autoshow in late April due to the chinese reaction of the name "4". Although BMW have successfully tested the car via focus groups in China who have accepted the car's designation with BMW previewing all three concepts of the 4er to prospective customers.

Now it is all systems go although people question BMW's decision to semi abandon the M3 which will return in Sedan guise only. The M4 is potentially BMW M's opportunity to create a new iconic M car , a car with literally no history and a very promising future.

The Cabrio variant retains the folding hard-top (with lighter aluminium roof panels) in order to build on its success in markets where the car oozes exclusivity. In the Chinese market and the defining market which made BMW question the decision of the folding roof hardtop over a soft top. The 3er Cabrio outsells the Coupe thanks to its popularity with female customers.

The exciting addition to the 4er is the downsized Gran Coupe model offering the exclusivity and individuality of the larger 6er model but using the more aesthetic and dynamic appearance of the 4er Coupe, effectively the 4er Coupe with two extra doors on each side. The Gran Coupe model will then launch as an M4 offering M customers more exclusivity , style and flexibility over the Coupe

In 2013 BMW will also whet enthusiast appetites as they have with the 4er Coupe with a 2er Coupe concept car. Iconic in every respect the 2er has a similar variation to the face of the 4er but closely linking to the 1er - The bloodline remains but the details are very much different from the Sporthatch. Like the 4er, the 2er Coupe will drop its roofline another few inches but retain its compact proportions. An additional cabrio model will appear as will an exciting four door model that will be continued under the Gran Coupe designation.

What will 2000 Euros get us?

Is there any precedence to indicate if the price differential just buys us the swoopy new sheet metal or if the coupe will be better appointed in base model?

You're gonna pay extra for those LED lights, regardless of the base price delta.

Audi has like a $5,000 markup from the A4 to A5 so this is actually relatively reasonable.

I wonder what the price difference on the 4GC will be... maybe another $2K...
My only market in 2014 will be the 4GC or the regular F30.

Since when has Euro BMW prices and options translated well to USA BMW standards? The Europeans can order their car and build it piece by piece. We can't do that.

2k EURO is very ok premium. And this car owns A5 now. Very eager to see the vert roof line as well.

If correct, it's reasonable mark up which leads to the next question what features and equipment will be standard? Here are some suggestions; sports seats, anthracite headliner, M-Sport steering wheel and I don't think it would be too much to include Dynamic Handling Package.

Not surprising at all that this would have at least a couple k premium over the 3er sedan. Even the coupe. 3ers have always costed more than the sedan which I never understood but I guess cuz it was sportier. But following general BMW rule for yrs this makes perfect sense and is no surprise.

Yeah I saw where Scott posted this in the other thread yesterday and was surprised no one seemed to pick up on it or discuss it. 2000 Euro is only $2500 USD. If the price hike actually remains in that range for the US (remains to be seen) then this is going to be far less of a premium than I expected. Very, very good news.

Less than expected, perhaps, but the delta in price between the coupe and sedan increases 30% from the E90/E92 to the F30/F32.

I highly doubt that.

It should also be noted that the current 3 sedan and coupe actually costs MORE in Germany than in the US. For example, the German coupe has a base price of 31,700 Euro. That's $41,100 USD. Of course the coupe is only $38,700 USD here in the states. So I would expect that the 2000 euro upcharge will be right around $2000 USD. This is exactly the price increase from the current sedan to the current coupe. In other words, there may be no more difference from 3 -> 4 than there is from current 3 sedan to 3 coupe.

I thought the whole point of creating the 4er was to charge more for it. Weird.

My question is this: what is with all the talk in the BMW press release of the 4 coupe being more "exclusive"? The word is used several times, and we all know "exclusive" is another word for "expensive". They really made it seem like the 4 coupe was going to be A LOT more expensive than the 3 sedan. I'm wondering what is with the choice of words if it's really not much more expensive at all.
