Hi! First of all thanks for finding this! Second, could you please measure out the size of the bolts and the required measurements to create this tool? I would like to first try tightening that bolt, but in a 440i the engine bay is stuffed, so it is hard to measure. Thanks in advance!

1/8 clockwise was what I needed for my car. Initially I tried 1/4 which made the steering stiff and prevented it from going neutral after a turn while driving. So I backed it out to 1/8 and it was perfect. No more knocking noise on bumps and no more knocking noise when steering wheel is shuffled left and right when car is off.
Just to clarify, did you install the service kit, or just tighten the original?
Just tighten the original. Will take measurements when i come back from my trip and share here

Are there any obvious design or material changes for the new thrust piece?
Just wondering whether it is just a replacement piece rather than a permanent fix.

My car was in for the steering rack recall a few weeks ago. The dealership was a bit sketchy on the details, I was hoping for the new thrust piece but in the end they only replaced the 4 bolts.

I don't have any bad clunking yet but I noticed after the recall the steering was sticking slightly when the steering was around dead centre.

I saw somewhere you could buy the 3 pin adapter.

A spanner wrench might work if it only needs 1/4-1/8 of a turn to tighten. Only thing is, they would only use 2 of the 3 holes. Not ideal, but would probably work. Anyone want to tofft and give it a shot?

Edit: Harbor Freight has one for $5. Might just pick one up and try it myself.

2013 335i M sport with EDC and 60k miles.
car had this really bad rattle on the left side and had been doing it for a year
my brother owns a '11 335i e92 and his cabin is so quite compared to mine all cuz of that freaking rattle. it was making me hate the car and I was about ready to sell it or trade it.
it was bad. I could make the rack clunk with one hand when lifting the driver side tire.
decided to make the tool myself this past Saturday. after finding this thread.
took off the bellypan and just colored the three holes with a sharpie and then grabbed a piece of white paper and layed it on top it.
it marked the holes beautifully.

grabbed a wide enough and long enough piece of solid wood I had laying around and drilled the three holes and bolted 3 bolts through those holes.

turned the screw a little a time until the clunk was gone.
is like driving a new car. so quiet and no longer sound like a Yukon with a broken sway bar link.

not hard to make the tool guys. it took me longer removing all those 8mm bolts for the belly pan than making the actual tool

Is it possible to reach the thrust piece from above? It looks like it would be pointing upwards towards the airbox.

no.
unless you find a tool shaped in an L and has a ratcheting head at the end.
its not difficult. to do from the bottom. I only lifted one side of the car to do it.
remove belly and pan and the other smallish rectangle covering the rack (3 8mm bolts) and then just reach in with your tool.
there is few thick cables coming out of the bottom part of the rack itself that get in the way but is doable.

I figured that was the case, think I will give this a go some time this week. Thanks for the help!

I used the harbor freight spanner wrench, no issues.

So I grabbed one of the harbor freight adjustable pin wrenches, I couldn't get that thing to budge at all. Eventually I was applying enough force that I was having a hard time keeping the pins seated instead of sliding out :/

I had the same issue, try using your left hand to hold it down in place and turn with the right. It's almost like breaking a nut, because once you get it to move just a bit it's much easier after that.

I have a clunk in my car and I couldn't find anything causing it on my own, handed it over to my Indy for them to see if they could find anything loose while the suspension extended on the lift, nothing found.

I am going to stop by Harbor Freight and give that spanner a go, this seems like a great lead. Thanks for the investigation/info all.

Edit: my car doesn't seem to have this issue

I bought the $5 Harbor Freight adjustable pin wrench, and tighten this nut yesterday. It worked perfect. I at first tightened it about 1/4 turn, but it ended up being too tight. Backed it off a little and it's perfect. I was very surprised that only about an 1/8 of a tun made such a big difference. Thanks everyone!!

So over the last month or two my steering clunk has been getting worse and worse... took it to my preferred shop last night, and found out my steering rack wasn't torqued down to the subframe! The tech tightened them down and the noise is gone.

The two bolts for the rack are stretch bolts supposedly, so I'm going to replace them on the next warm day.

Clunking right side front

Have the same problem on my 330d F30 2012 with 35000 miles on clock, started 9 months ago checked everything on suspension but could find anything wrong there and as I am a mechanic this was puzzling me even when I got it MOT'd still couldn't find issue and the knocking sound on the steering when the car was stationary was getting worse. So decided to goggle it and when looking found a you tube video from an American guy showing the same problem and he found out there is a repair kit for it BMW part number 32 10 6 891 974 and it's only £24. This apparently only came out September 2018 as this problem is very commen. Got the repair kit but then found out fitting it would only take about 40 mins but then you have to take off the steering rods off and have to check a lot of stuff with a meter and such like so only a BMW dealer can do, got a price off the dealer of £550 (3.5 hours) to do job with includes the 4 wheel alignment. But then I find out from this forum that you can just turn the nut/screw clockwise 1/8 of a turn and this solves the problem, problem is you need a special tool with 3 prongs on it to turn it so just used a brake caliper wind back tool with a 2 prongs on it and I turned it 1/8 and hey presto it worked no more steering knock and no knocking when driving the car either, not sure how long it will be like this for but it's done the job for now at no cost.

so for anyone doing the quarter turn has your steering rack clunked since ?

I had the same thing with my edc dealer said dampers. Switched to b6s clunks still there. So this is my next guess. Or should I get the repair kit and just torque it to spec

Buy the kit. 15mins job with this harbor freight tool. https://www.harborfreight.com/adjust...nch-36554.html

I originally re-torque but came back after 20k

I first tighten it which resolved the clunk for about 20k when it eventually reared its head. So i bought the kit and install it. That was last month.
