2016 F31 340iX B58 USA Spec Build
Some of you guys have probably remembered us from the old days when we built E39 M5 Tourings (featured at BimmerFest), E38 S62 Manual, F31 328d RWD and things like that. Now, after years of silence, we decides to build something new and fun. Original plan was S63 or S55 swapped into F31 but
after a lot of going back and forth, we have decided to go with B58 AWD build. In my opinion, the F31 is one of the best looking cars on the streets, but sadly BMW decided not to offer the N55/B58 version in the states....so we had to build it instead. Build Brainstorm: 1) Stock B58. Down the road we can build one for higher power. (Ended up getting two. One with 5K miles and one rusted/flooded with 10K that will be built in the next few months. 2) Stock turbo for now but thinking of either Pure S2 or BigBoost. 2) AWD trans with Euro 335D xDrive (Still waiting for the Xdrive to get here) 3) 2.81 gearing. 3.15 would be more fun but the car is daily so 2.81 it is. (Obtained) 4) 2018 M3 conversion with ICON headlights (Obtained) 5) M4 Non carbon breaks (Obtained) 6) H&R Sways (Obtained) 7) ACC / SLI / Collision / Lane Change retrofit (Obtained hardware and FSC codes. Wiring is done) 8) M3 Interior (Still looking) 10) M3 wheels (Still looking) The starting point was to obtain a perfect donor and build vehicles. For donor, we got a 2017 340iX from NJ that suffered flood damage. And for the build vehicle we found a "Light Hit" 2016 F31 328iX at local Los Angeles Copart. Both cars were purchased based on the pictures and without any in-person inspection. The Flooded 2017 340iX Donor Vehicle: 2016 328iX Project vehicle with "Minor front end Damage" Based on the pictures, the damage on the F31 looked relatively minor and car seemed like a perfect candidate for the build. It looked like the car suffered a decent front end collision but nothing too serious.....so we thought. When the car came to us, the damage underneath was nothing like we could have imagined. It turned out that the body shop that the car originally went to after a crash, purchased the car from the owner on salvage retainment basis, then half-ass restored it by buying new bumper, spray can painting it, and then threw the car into the auction. What was not shown in the pictures, is that both frame rails are bent (passenger side being 4 inches compressed, chassis harness completely cut from the front end, and most of the electronics being stripped from the car. This is the lesson I have learned once again buying from LA/Van Nuys CoPart auctions. Never ever ever buy a car from LA auction. Just don't. With all of the information in hand, and fact that we also are a pretty awesome body shop, I have made a decision to continue with the project and have our body guys reconstruct the entire front end and restore it to former glory. That job did take a long time, but the front end came out pretty much factory like. Last edited by MissionPerformance; 10-23-2018 at 07:09 PM.. |

Now time came to deciding he color the car will be switching to. I was stuck between few colors including Imola Red and San Marino Blue. After a bit of debate and looking at 100s of F31 pictures online, I decided to go with San Marino.
The body stripped down and ready for the respray: Frame is all painted and sitting outside for next 5 days to cure: Now that the body is finished, wiring harnesses ran and miles of wiring is added, time came to figure out the situation with the B58 power plant. I had one engine that came from a flooded donor car but there was one little issue..the engine was submerged under water for few days and result was: Little Video: https://share.icloud.com/photos/0FHP...9bPCjEVeoO8ThA Surprisingly, after full tear down, the motor was still in good shape, with one exception. LDS treatment on the B58 block cylinders rusts VERY easily and the result is the block that has to be sleeved to be usable. So for now I ended up getting a B58 with only 5K miles and set my flooded motor aside. After the initial project is finished, I will go back and build the engine with rods/pistons/sleeves and all those good things. The trans was full of water as well BUT was salvageable. I tore the trans apart, pulled every nut and bolt out of it and to my biggest surprise, it was still in perfect shape. So all new gaskets and orings and we are all set. This is awesome! I can't wait to see the results. As an F31 owner, I'm considering an engine swap in a few years, so I'm excited to see how things go.
If you get a chance, I'm curious if you can share the H&R Sways you ordered (part #). Also, consider the M4 CF Strut Brace conversion if applicable.

Cool Idea. Would be even cooler in manual, if you guys are open to swapping that over down the line.

Awesome project.
Been following Samcrac on YouTube for a bit, and he always mentions to make sure the car is sold directly from the insurance rather than a private seller. Just curious about the listing for the wagon, any indication it was from insurance vs private/reseller? |

Any update to this? Hoping for more power for my F31.. I would’ve done sways but dropping the subframe has dissuaded me. M Performance brakes are planned in a few months.

Any update? I'm hugely interested in doing this after my F31 is paid off. Yes I know, just buy a new 340 but I'm done with car payments for a while after this one and I'd rather just spend the few grand putting a B58 in my wagon because nothing hauls hockey gear better than a longroof.

I was just at Mission Performance yesterday getting my DME bench unlocked. I saw this Tesla, but I did not see this car parked in the front.

Have my been to this thread in a while but that car was finished years ago and now became a track/show/weekend ride. Love to take it to the Fontana speedway from to me to time….of course those rare moments when time permits.
