Secondly you may not be going into the correct slot. In between the metal plates, there are two openings on each side of the steering wheel designed for the release of airbags.

All you need is push harder if you are in the right slot. There is only one place for the right size of Allen key to go between the metal plates. If you are felling the resistance and the airbag didn't come off and you are sure your allen key went through the opening correctly, you probably just need a longer Allen key to push harder and get it all the way in. Make sure your allen key is thick enough so it can't go anywhere else besides the designed openings, something around 1/4" inch think and about 6" long should do the trick. Remember, these pins have to hold the airbag when it is going off at 200MPH for that split second, there will be some resistance.

The side of the airbags have a metal casing, you can't really damage the side of the airbag unless you have the strength of Superman.

ABSOLUTELY DISCONNECT THE BATTERY WHEN YOU'RE MESSING WITH THE AIRBAG!!

If you're pushing in the hole as pictured and you feel resistance but nothing happens, use a bigger allen key.

Use an allen key for this, and make sure it's a medium thickness allen key. You will push into one hole until you feel resistance from metal clips - keep pushing and half the airbag will pop out. If you push and feel the clips and bottom out the allen key without the airbag popping out, chances are the allen key is too small. I wasted about 30 minutes trying to figure this out - it's not that complicated. Push in and it pops out. Once you do one side, do the other side in the same way. It really is about 10 seconds once you figure it out.

Allen Key , Allen Key , Allen Key

Thanks to both of you !

It looks like my szl 2TB connector has 5 wires connected to it. From the pinout diagram for this, it looks as though this means it is prewired for shift paddles vs 4 wires for no paddles. Can anyone confirm?

Success! coded paddles verbaut activ and 2TB in VO and it worked without added wiring.

Looks like the wheel isnt heated so I will have to tranfer the paddles from this wheel to another m sport wheel I have that is heated but doesnt have paddles.

Any tips on how to drill the screwholes? what size drill? placement etc....

Thanks

Mdai245,
Is your car pre-wired by the BMW? May I ask what year and model is yours?

Thanks

Thanks for posting this DIY . This is one feature that I really regret not getting. Ordered all my parts, hoping I can figure out the coding after installing.

mdai245,
Thanks! I also have the luxury line like yours but mine is 2012.
I took apart the steering column tonight and found the car is already pre-wired for the shift paddles. Replaced the sport line steering wheel with the M sport steering wheel. Since I already added 2TB to the car, the shift paddles are working now!

I got a copy at home, send me a pm if you still need a copy.

For those who have performed this successfully, what coding was needed for the paddles to perform?

I have coded 2TB in FA already for sport transmission. It seems like some are only coding FA to enable the paddles..

thanks

EDIT; I attached another copy just incase others are having a hard time downloading the original one.

Also just confirmed, 2TB in FA was the only thing needed for everything to work with SAT

Just finished this DIY. A few things that will make this easier; adjust both front seats to their farthest setting to obtain more space and open the moon roof to let light in. Note; the steering wheel can be rotated easily with the battery disconnected. Another issue I ran into is I ordered the wiring harness for a NON-HEATED steering wheel. I ended up just taking the connector for the paddle shifter and incorporating it to the harness that came with the car(Pin 2 and Ground of the steering wheel harness).

Also, I've attached pictures of connector A83*2B (SZL) and A173*7B (FEM). To my surprise, my vehicle was pre-wired for paddle shifter(maybe because its a sportline). In the pictures it's the Green/white wire. The last two pictures shows how the steering wheel harness needs to be routed so it doesn't interfere with the horn. Before installing the complete steering wheel onto the car, I installed the airbag onto the steering wheel and made sure the wiring harness doesn't interfered with the horn mechanism.

Lastly, the Steering wheel BOLT needs to be torque down to 46 ft-lbs.

So I installed a new M Sport steering wheel with paddle shifters, replacing my sportline wheel without paddles. I had already previously coded 2TB and when I checked FEM BODY, it showed that 3190 PADDLES_VERBAUT was already set to aktiv so I assumed that the paddles would work plug and play.

However, I get no feedback in the instrument cluster and nothing happens when pulling either of the paddles. I already changed PADDLES_VERBAUT from aktiv to nichtaktiv and back to aktiv to see if that would fix the issue, but it still doesn't work. Would that mean that my car isn't pre-wired for paddles?

In my previous experience, coding 2TB was enough to activate the paddle shifter function. Just curious did you check if you have a wire running from the A83*2B (SZL) connector to A173*7B (FEM) connector? That single wire is what sends the signal for the paddle shifter function. Hope that helps.

I haven't had the time to check yet as I had assumed that having the paddles folder in FEM_BODY meant that my car already had the wire

Just tackled this today, but am having an issue with everything back together. Horn no longer works, wipers are stuck on (stalk is non responsive), no horn, and im getting a "cruise control malfunction error. Does anyone have any insight as to where to start with this? I was missing one of the connections inside the steering wheel to the multifunction button, but that is now connected, and still no improvement.

Anyone have any ideas?

If your car production date is up to mid 13's i am afraid that you aren'tprewired ...
