I've spent hours looking for the specifics on maintaining my 2016 340i and I can't find much here to help.

Bentley hasn't come out with a B58 version yet.

So, if you know things like capacities, fluids, anything that could help me or other B58 xDrive owners who like to DIY, I'd appreciate it and I think others would as well.

For one, I can't find capacities or fluid specs for transfer case, differential, or trans (manual). I'm sure I'll get bmw mtf for the trans, but haven't found proper specs for fluids.

If I find them, I'll post. If you know them, please share.

As more 2016's come out of warranty, I suspect some will be DIYing. Hope I can adjust to working on this from my e46.


All I know so far:

Oil: LL-14 (but apparently LL-01 is ok...I might try 0/30 next change)

Plugs: NGK silzkgr8b8s 94201 Need thin socket and wobble extension

Belt: 11 28 8 613 707 (fcpeuro doesn't have them yet)

Manual trans capacity? (MTF-3, I believe)

Transfer case capacity?

Differential capacity?

PS fluid? (Is there any in the steering mechanism)

EDIT: And the power steering is completely electromechanical. No hydraulic fluid needed at all (unfortunately). But for maintenance it makes things easier, of course.

EDIT: And the power steering is completely electromechanical. No hydraulic fluid needed at all (unfortunately). But for maintenance it makes things easier, of course.

I saw Pentosiin CHF 11s as the steering fluid. Now I am confused

That's what is needed for older cars with hydraulic assist power steering. Newer cars all use electric power steering. The B58 cars have a reservoir under the hood that looks like a power steering reservoir but it's the expansion tank for the air water intercooler.

B58 has two reservoir for coolant, is that what you mentioned?

I'm curious about the steering also, since my car has listed "hydro steering servotronic" though the fluid may just be internal and 'really' lifetime.

I looked into ISTA+ and it looks like I need an ethernet cable--my laptop doesn't have an ethernet--can I use it with bluetooth through the obdII port, or perhaps the usb plug in my car gives me access to where I need?

Ugh--new car to me--already need to buy another key for it and a new laptop! It is going to be a pain I can tell!

Thanks for the new TIS link--I've only started looking at it, but haven't found capacities listed.

Look for a USB-to-Ethernet adapter. Can be found on Amazon for $10. Much cheaper than a new laptop!

I've never seen a capacity for the drivetrain because there isn't a set amount to add. You're supposed to just fill it until it starts coming out of the fill hole. Goes for diff, trans, etc.

Definitely no CHF 11S needed since about the E90/E60 gen cars. Those listing are often old translations or just not updated properly.

Definitely definitely no hydraulic steering of any kind in any F3x 3/4 series.

Yeah, the only reason I mentioned the two expansion tanks is because I've seen some people mistake the smaller one for a power steering fluid reservoir. Seems like there's no confusion there.

Thank you! I noticed both reservoirs...have a lot of learning to do with this engine and I'm not looking forward to tearing into it, but I've got plugs on the way. You don't happen to know the maintenance schedule for plugs, do you? Wondering if they might have been done under warranty and 50K, but probably not.

Plugs are at 60k miles or 6th oil change..

Thank you! FYI, in looking at the TIS site, I have a feeling there might not be a drain for some of our 'things' like transfer case...and, if you haven't looked yet, maybe diff? It wouldn't surprise me...we don't have a dipstick, we have 'lifetime' fluids. I know I saw some note about filling 'something' with no mention of a drain plug...off to realoem now because I'm curious. (I see a fill plug on transfer case and no plugs at all on differential. I see both plugs on the manual trans, at least. )

My vehicle is RWD so it does not have a transfer case.

Not sure why there's no Bentley manual this engine has been out since 2016 they have lost it or something. They already have the G20 it's not likely they will come out with a manual for that. There are plenty of you tube videos and forum people who work on these engines as well as aftermarket support so maybe they can't compete in the age of you tube and social media.

I suspect Bentley will come out with the b58 edition soonish. I get that it wants a decent consumer base and for this car I suspect most are either still under warranty or not working on their cars.

Someone here mentioned using a Foxwell NT510 and I'm wondering if that might be an alternative for the coding side of things? I am old and frightened of messing my laptop hooked up to the car. I start in on the threads of how to set up ista and think it would be a pitb.

Might you have links to consider this more seriously now that I need a new battery registered, figured I'll save a lot of aggravation long term having this. But, if ista+ lets me double press the lock button on keyfob and get auto up windows, I am in!

On another subject--ordered belts from fcp for my car...got 1153 long, not 1155 as is on the car. Has anyone changed their belts on the b58?

Any light coding is doable with Bimmercode or carly...

Apparently my model needs a Foxwell NT530, which is arriving today--we'll see if it can register my new battery when my shop with autologic can't.

I've also found specs of my fluids, I hope:

Trans: MTF LT-5 1 L (only one liter?)
Front Diff: hypoid axle oil G2 .5 L
Rear diff-- hypoid axle oil G1 3 x .5L

I'm not a software person so much, so will try to avoid ista and the temptation to make too many changes to things.

I've been diying since '94 on bmws...not sure how much translates from the e36/46, but some of it should.
