Pretty sure they show them that way to show how they are made. You definitely don’t want that open design for the road where sand, rocks etc get lodged in the “spokes”. I’m certain there will be a traditional sidewall that will protect the interior but also help with handling, support and stiffness,

that makes sense, the one thing I was thinking but didn't include in my comment was the thought of stuff getting jammed inside the spokes.

Not going anywhere and they've had prototypes of this for years. Michelin won't be able to mass produce this tire with good uniformity limits, it's a non starter. I'd love to see how it does in rolling resistance tests(one of the most important tests these days).

GY creates the first spring tire :P it went on the lunar rover

Ive seen something very similar on a pro-lawnmower this week. Looked perfectly matched for that use case.

These tires are pretty good in off-road conditions and there has been a ton of work in the mega tire space(think 63" in tires)

2007? They’ve been testing the waters on the “tweel” since late 199x. I remember seeing this nearly identical design from Michelin when I had my then brand new Z3 1.9L.

Seems like someone at Michelin goes through the old research files once every 10 years and go “hey this MIGHT be a good idea!”

In 1989 area I saw a prototype use plastic with tread from Michelin. Science article, probably could be found on microfilm if I could remember more info
