Register early or they’ll scrap it!

Just seen this email from our VW dealer regarding our Tiguan we have on order that we originally said we wanted to pick up in Sept:

“VW UK have made us aware due to phase 2 of Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) Real Driving Emissions (RDE), we will have to register all cars that are built in June or July by the 15th August, otherwise they will have to be scrapped.”

Wtf! Scrap a brand new built car, that is mad! Ours is scheduled for build next week so it falls into this bracket.

They have said that if we agree to register on or before the 15th August that VW will contribute another £500 towards the car. Haven’t said what happens if we don”t but I’d guess that means new order and big delay.....

WLTP, what fun!

Interesting because since September 2018 all new built cars had to be certified under WLTP, only limited unsold pre September 2018 stock could be sold up until the September 2019 deadline.

I wonder when your car was actually built.

Details here, looks like you still be able to take it in September though.

That makes me uneasy...I work for Vauxhall and there were some of ours cars kicking around last year that needed to be registered by the end of August. Anything that wasn’t had to go to a local DVSA centre to be individually checked and for £100 (iirc) would be signed off and legal for emissions purposes and then registered.

I’d want to see their communication from VW to confirm what the retailer is telling you...

Also, the 15th August is a very odd date.

It’s more to do with RDE apparently:

“What is RDE?
Real Driving Emissions (RDE) is another round of tests being implemented across all cars from all manufacturers to measure emissions under real world driving conditions. It will be introduced on 1 September 2019 to complement the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP).
These tests make sure cars deliver low emissions on the road, with RDE focusing on N0x and other emissions.
This additional requirement means all Volkswagen vehicles will need to be tested with RDE1 (the first round of testing) so that vehicle sales can continue from 1 September 2019.
Everything manufactured before 1 September must be sold before 1 September unless it is RDE type approved.”

Basically there’s a factory shutdown over aug to retool for new MY and I guess complete these tests, hence why it’s current build cars being told to register. Ours is a bespoke build and scheduled at the factory for next week so I know it’s not built yet!

£500 is not enough in my view would need a nice service pack too, see how far you can push them. You have all week.

We already have that! In fairness the deal is the cheapest by some margin from everywhere else I’ve looked, and I’ve gone through many! The wife will also be pleased not to have a 69 car

Sounds more like a sales trick to boost pre number plate change sales. Wouldn't trust lying salesman's word, I'd want proper evidence.

I know Audi have closed down production (according to a few different dealerships I spoke with) to update for the new MY and new road emission testing.

Been on with VW Customer Services:

"Thank you for letting me know Neil, we are aware of the RDE testing and this will affect vehicles sold after 1st of September, however in regards to the registrations I do not see why vehicles would be scrapped if they have not been registered as if they have been built before 1st of September they would be taxed according to the CO2 measured at the time. I have double checked this for you and I cannot see any information in regards to the necessary vehicle registrations."

Though they also said that most up to date sales information is with the retailer so who knows! They are getting in touch with the supplying dealer to call us so lets see what happens!

I don't don't doubt that part, I'm doubting the dubious claim from the salesman that perfectly good cars already with a dealer will have to be sent for scrap.
