ConnectedDrive apps whilst driving...
So have just taken delivery of my new 328i and still learning the connected drive system. One of the many selling points of the vehicle was spotify integration using my iPhone. If i connect the iPhone via USB cable the spotify app becomes available under the connected drive menu, i can then browse all my playlists and have full cover art whilst playing music. The system works really well. But.... this only works whilst stationary with the vehicle in Park and the handbrake on. If i drive off with spotify playing the system continues to play the song but the spotify app in connected drive is greyed out, it displays a message "For your safety: certain applications can only be used stationary" -
Is there a way to disable this? I like switching between DAB radio and my music whilst driving and I can't do this with spotify. Once i drive off i cannot select the spotify app at all. So in order to do this whilst driving i need to pull over, put the car in park and apply the handbrake just to change my music source. This is crazy. |

Work around...
Bit of a work around, if i start spotify through connected drive, then select the playlist i want and start playing; when i drive off the cover art along with the song information disappears and shows the warning as described above. Now if i exit out of this and select multimedia, then external devices and select my 'phone via USB' i will have my song details and cover art back along with skip forward and back. Still not ideal but at least now the screen isn't wasted.

I've got the same problem whilst using the Tunein radio app (2015 X3 LCI with ConnectedDrive).
I can only select/change channels when stationary and the handbrake applied. Once I start moving the app is greyed out and the screen doesn't display the Tunein info anymore. Is there a way this can be changed? |

There's a setting to allow "Apps In Motion" but this needs to be coded through the OBD2 Port. If you do a search you'll find plenty of info...

Would love to know how you do this, there is no info that I can find saying it can be coded out. I think you might be confused with dvd in motion now that can be coded.

I think because you are connected through the BMW connect menu which is meant to work in stationary. If you open it through external devices it might work bec it is meant to work even in motion.

I have just taken delivery of F15 xdrive 40d and have the same issue with the Connected Apps. Even for me DVD in motion is limited to 60km/h with coding.

Same issue on 2016 M3, and in the M3 there is no park option so once your moving you cant change songs at all unless you switch to USB mode. If you switch back to radio and back to USB playback of spotify, you have to pick up the phone to press the play button.
Its a crazy design flaw that is more dangerous than allowing control from the i-drive controller, just like picking a radio station. A bureaucrat has decided that because it has the word 'app' it cant be used on the move. who the hell signed off on this!! My wifes Mercedes just works, no issue and her car supports car play which adds a lot of functionality - all of which work when on the move There has to be a sensible way of disabling the in motion function, otherwise you may as well use your phone and not bother with the car which defeats the object of 'integration', I cannot imagine BMW are not aware of the command to do this, or that someone hasn't managed to decode it. the issue seems to by limited to Australia and Hong Kong from what I can see |

I was never able to find a way to code this out, the only real way was to replace the modules with overseas ones. In the end I went with Apple Music which integrates really well with idrive. |

Hi jdmagoo,
Thanks for the explanation, understand the approval process must be painful in Australia, many other manufacturers support native spotify integration so it can't be rocket science to allow that app only to be used on the move. Since the hardware is identical in other geographies, like NZ where there is no restriction, it must be easy to get someones e-sys file and look through for anything that is obviously different. It looks like its not an in-motion setting but some other setting/code |

Surely there has to be a way, in my E92 i was able to access SMS messages and emails when the car was stationary in traffic which was great.
Now in my F36 I can't access anything unless it's in park with the handbreak on, so dumb! |

I emailed BMW Australia and asked why this is the case and this is the response I got:
"Thank you for your email. Regarding the functionality of SMS and Email messages, and ConnectedDrive apps, a vehicle needs to be stationary (defined as being in Park and the brake up). This is for BMW Group Australia to be in line with government regulations relating to Driver Distraction Laws." |

LCI 330i now requires both the hand brake and to be in park. Stupid. |
