340i B58 Engine Squeak/Chirp - Anyone??
2016 340i
6MT ~1100 miles Does anyone else have a tiny squeak/chirp coming from their B58 engine bay on cold starts and under load? I plan on taking a video of this tomorrow morning, but thought I'd post here in the meantime. It's not very loud, especially with the windows up, but I know once the weather warms up and I have the windows down, it'll drive me nuts. I can hear it on the first startup as well as bouncing off of parked cars or medians from the passenger side every time I'm on the accelerator (under light load). Back in the garage, in neutral, a few revs and it's not there while the car is stationary. Weird. I hate taking it in for something like this because the dealer will likely say it's all all part of"normal operation", however I think I might. Unless anyone else has had the same little noise and can offer a fix! |

I have she same problem on my 328.. It was at the dealer for 4 weeks and its still not fixed... Someone told me it might have something to do with the eccentric shaft.

Just an update here; taking this in to the dealer next week.
Took a video, but the chirp is hard to pick up without headphones. The chirping goes away at the 0:32 mark, for comparison. Almost sounds like it's a tiny exhaust leak or something.... |

since you have 6MT. check if you're in the recall (TSB) campaign on the B58 motor.

my VIN is listed as part of the service thing and I'm bringing it in tomorrow but car has been running fine as far as I can tell. This B58 "recall" is technically a service bulletin and not a formal recall so it will not show up as recalled even if you are included. |

Stuff is filling up with oil during a start so there is some extra noises while it all pressurizes, but if it's happening when it's running sounds like worth investigating with the dealership. It's a brand new engine platform so bound to be issues maybe not something they can diagnose right away but at least get it on record and the numbers help corporate understand what is going on with new products.

Yep, I've got an appt for next week, I'll report back with any findings! Also, just called BMWUSA, there are no open campaigns or bulletins for my VIN.

After starting the engine the alternator swings into action trying to recharge the battery and because the alternator's working hard the belt will slip on the pulley making a chirping noise. Usually as the battery voltage increases the Charge rate from the alternator will decrease also reducing the load on the drive belt and pulley.
One way to test this is to use a clean pistol sprayer with water only. Do Not use anything but clean water.. Spray on the alternator drive belt near the alternator. Adjust the pistol sprayer so it's like a squirt gun, stand to one side so you don't get splash back from the spin-off of the water. If the sound stops you have found the problem. If you still have the noise get out the stethoscope and continue the search. |

I have exactly the same sound, took out another one for a test drive and it did exactly the same, they were built about 4 months apart so I figured it's not an isolated problem and left it. But yes, same noise, same place, more noticeable in sport and stopped next to another vehicle or wall with the window down and warmed up.

I have the same noise. 340i with about 1800 miles now, been squeaking since new. I was just talking to my advisor yesterday about this. However mine is a automatic. I thought I was going crazy. I do have another annoying sound and it's the valve train. Under medium acceleration the valve train is super loud, sounds like excessive play, but who knows. Well I guess I'm not that crazy.....

Ahhh, the joys of a new engine from BMW. I gotta say it seems weird and normal at the same time. I would lean toward normal i guess because with this new engine, we do not know whats happening in the first 30 seconds on start-up.
I can see how that drives the owners crazy but it does go away within a minute right? I bet you the dealer has no Fing clue what this is and will probably create a case if enough customers approach with this noise issue. I love the N52, what an engine. I know its slow, blah blah. My N55 sounds like shit when its starts up compared to the N52. IMO.

Thanks to all for the input. I really hope it's not normal operation; I love cruising with the windows down in the summer, I hope that's not what the engine sounds like under load. It's noticeable and irritating.
Quick update here. It's currently at the dealer being investigated. My tech heard it on a cruise and did not think that was normal, they kept it overnight to witness a cold start. Interesting side note: apparently when my VIN was entered into the system as being at the dealership for service, it set off some flags at BMW NA. They called my dealer asking if the car was still there. Long story short, the diff in my car is incorrect. My SA said "you're probably getting great gas mileage, but not the best acceleration". They're swapping the diff out for the correct unit. Wild stuff; not sure what ratio is in it currently. Will update this thread when resolved. |
