435i Gauge Cluster Back light

I just either noticed something new or something is broken. I have a 2015 435i and I noticed during the daytime the gauge cluster is not backlit. I could have sworn I've seen it illuminated in the daytime. It does light up at night fine though.

I think you might have been in a bit of a shade where the car's sensor gives low light readings and your gauge cluster lights up.

I thought the same thing when I first got mine. Now I realize that’s just the way it is. But, it would be nice to have a little backlighting during the dreary winter months.

I feel the same. My GTI had lighted gauges and I became used to them always being lit at a consistent level during daylight hours.

The lack of a back light really only bugs me at sunrise/sunset and the heavy overcast days when it's not quite dim enough for the gauges/headlights to light, but just dark enough the gauges are in shadow. Fortunately, I have the HUD which negates the need to look down as much, though I still do out of habit.

During the night it's illuminated. During the day, if there lighting is dim, it's illuminated. It during the day the lighting is bright around the car it'll turn the backlighting off.

Yeah I've noticed on my car there are three levels independent on whether the headlights are on or not.

1. Everything off
2. Cluster and interior backlit
3. Backlight+ change to red script on ac/hud + map change to dark mode

Not broken. It's not backlit during the day if you don't have a digital dash offered in LCI.
