Is my car written off?
Had a great Christmas Eve, I was parked up at my girlfriends house and someone drove into the rear of my parked car, luckily a passer by recognised my car and knocked the door. I called the Police, reported the accident and it is going through insurance, obviously the other party admitted fault.
I have only had the car for two months, it’s a 2013 320d with 60k on the clock. It was immaculate before this, probably worth around £10k. Does anyone know the likelihood of this being written off? It seems to drive okay, obviously don’t know if there is any really serious damage at this point. So so gutted as I really like this car, I’d be absolutely gutted if it’s written off. Any advice would be great. Thanks, Peter View post on imgur.com View post on imgur.com View post on imgur.com |

Hi,
Thanks for your reply! The boot seems ok, it opens and closes fine and the boot floor looks normal, I couldn’t see any visible crumpling or damage, although I didn’t lift the boot liner much and it was too dark to see. Peter |

That is less than I was thinking.
I don’t have much experience with insurance claims, do you have an idea of what the limit would be before they claim it a write off? Thanks again. |

No deep knowledge I'm afraid mate. I'd say that you're probably skirting the line a bit with it - just my gut feeling. Fingers crossed and try to not let it ruin your Christmas.

I think that the repair will cost more that that. Don’t think it will be a write off but there are an awful lot of parts to replace and the labour will also be a major expense. Just my opinion.
I can see, bumper, boot, quarter panel, lights, maybe filler cap. |

Definitely filler cap, it is damaged. Do insurance companies ever let you contribute toward the repair costs rather than writing off?
I paid a lot less than what this car is worth and looking on Autotrader, I won’t find one the same spec for even more than what it’s worth. Or if it is written off do I just admit defeat, take the money and hope I can find something as good. Just so gutted, I really like/liked this car. |

I got rear shunted recently and speaking to repairers they mentioned something along the lines of 60% of value of car and it will be written off. Chassis damage obviously is a different story but it doesn’t look too bad.

Repaired through BMW will be close to write off (but unlikely unless much hidden damage) on a £10k car looking at the pics. Repairs through a reasonably priced local body shop should definitely not be a write off unless significant damage that can't be seen on the pics.

Rear bumper, quarter, boot lid, rear lights cluster, paint (without seeing any damage underneath) will likely put this into uneconomical repair (especially if you factor in hire car costs). You might get lucky but I wouldn’t hold out much hope.

If the F30 cost 3.5k with just rear bumper and bootlid damage, then adding in the rear quarter damage, lights, and any other sundry parts is going to be close to a write off imo.

Could be possible to find a repairer that will know at what point it would be a write off, and they can quote to do the repair for less to avoid it being written off. |

Thanks for all the replies.
The other driver blew 0 on the breathalyser, I’m convinced that she was on something, police didn’t pursue further though. I have had the car recovered as I didn’t want to leave it in the street as it looks quite vulnerable. I was told I’d likely hear tomorrow about what will be happening next. Any advice on what I should do? Or do you think I should just wait until I hear from my insurance? Thanks again, Peter |

I’m not sure what GAP is, just googled it and it is to do with the value of the car and what is owed? Fortunately I don’t owe anything for the car if that’s what you mean?

I guess you haven't then, so be prepared for your insurance payout to be less than the cost of a similar replacement. |

I still would be surprised if it’s written off. The OP’s insurance company will probably just recommend a local body shop, not BMW. As such, the estimates will be lower than suggested.
