Official Virtual Dyno Settings Thread

Virtual Dyno is a useful tool to measure power and torque of cars, especially comparing the same car from stock to when we add modifications, hardware, flash tunes, different fuels etc to see what if any improvement has resulted.

It's freeware for PC available for download here https://barnhill.bitbucket.io/

For best results ZF8 auto cars use 4th gear and 6 speed manual cars use 3rd gear, essential to use the same stretch of road each log and it should be as flat and level as possible.

Auto log using BM3 or MHD etc and ensure your are at least logging Time, RPM, AFR and Boost PSI.

Roll in Sport+ or DSC Off in manual mode in the selected gear from about 2000 RPM and 100% depress the accelerator until 6800 RPM. You want to get a 100% accelerator log from 2500 RPM to 6800 RPM.

It works on a similar basis to a chassis/rolling road dyno, but the road and wind resistance provide the load rather than resistance applied to the rollers of a dyno. If you have an up and down road section effectively you're varying the applied load during the run and your results will be off.

Once you install the program you need to set up your car(s) in Car Editor, set your preferred Dyno and column settings. My preference is Dynojet, HP and lbft as most people can relate to those more easily.

Here's a base list of B58 variant car data. I've noticed there seems to be a difference in the final drive ratio with the manual 6 speed transmission cars between the M140i/M240i and the 340l/440i cars. Please let me know if this is right or not or any other major errors.

You can adjust the car weight and add your own passenger weight for more accuracy e.g. if you have put your car on the scales and the actual weight if different to the weights below and also if you've changed the standard tire sizes you'll need to adjust the tire height accordingly.

For further accuracy you can also use the SAE correction allowing for ambient pressure and temperature once you load a log file

Car Editor car settings

File>Options>Dyno settings

File>Options>Columns and Profiles settings

Make sure you have these exact column headings and only have 100% accelerator (TPS) rows in the CSV file

You can use an unedited log file, but it's best to delete out irrelevant data and ensure that RPM increases from row one to the last entry, e.g. if you have the first entry at 2650 RPM then second row 2500RPM simply delete the first row. The minimum requirements for a data file to generate Power and Torque is Time, TPS (Accelerator at 100%) and RPM

Here's a sample of how it can look if you record and use the data correctly.

These two logs compare a stock M140i with v3.0 of MHD Stage 2 95_102 OTS map using E30 fuel to the same car with new spark plugs, CG Precision DS-1 200 cell catted down pipe and E32 fuel using the v3.1 MHD E30 Stage 1 OTS map, plus 2 - 3 PSI added via a device similar to JB+

You can see the differences in AFR from the non-E30 map to the E30 map and the boost difference and power and torque improvement.

Looks interesting but how does it account for wind speed and direction ?

It doesn't. If you do the testing in the same location each time and there are no unusual weather conditions it is a useful tool.

You also use other tools to cross reference and validate results, Dragy, VBox, drag strip or a rolling dyno etc.

There's a mobile app called Log Dyno which basically does the same thing and very user friendly.

That one is $26.99, Virtual Dyno for PC is freeware.

The same guy that created Virtual Dyno for PC, Brad Barnhill, has also developed a mobile app version, Virtual Dyno Mobile, that you can use as a data logger, trouble code check and reset function. Price for mobile is $3.99

Seriously a one time payment of less than $30 is bothering you?

We spend a fortune on these cars that's like half a tank of fuel.

Why the rude reply, we are all here to help each other and share our products experiences in a civilized way.

I have no problem with this topic and I was actually trying to help by recommending another similar product which I tried and liked, but it seems it's you who have a problem for no reason.

The purpose of this thread is specifically the Virtual Dyno application, how to set it up and use it.

Previously the information was spread out through the data log thread and I have a few people asking me how to set up, use it etc.

Maybe you could create your own thread for the other log based dyno options and show how to set up and use them?

Virtual Dyno is cool. Used it on my previous cars. This and Dragy and you’re set for metrics.

Thank you for this information.
I have downloaded this and entered everything as shown.
Did two logs this morning but the power reading is coming out too high.
Road was perfectly flat.
Could somebody please do a virtual dyno for me from my logs?
Be much appreciated.
Thanks.

There's problems with BM3 logging posted here for a while now, since they introduced the RAM channels I think.

If you actually look at the data file in Excel etc and look at the RPM and Time increments row to row you'll see they aren't consistent and some are doubled up, and RPM go negative etc, making the logged data not suitable for accurate Virtual Dyno use.

Maybe just select basic logging channels Time, Engine Speed (RPM), MAP (PSI), Lambda Actual (AFR), Gear and Accelerator Pedal

kern417 may be able to comment further regarding the weird BM3 logging?

It just depends on how many channels youre logging and the frequency it can capture data. It helps if you make sure that you're not duplicating any log channels, especially for timing and RPM. I delete duplicate timestamps when i export the csv.

OzBMR Mate which smoothing do you use and which one you find most accurate ? HP changes a lot with smoothing changing.

I generally use 3 and find it is the most accurate, assuming the log is good.

If the road is not completely flat etc you may need to use up to 6 otherwise you may have a wavy line and overstated peak values.

I've found that using less than 3 for smoothing typically gives overstated values

Also the CF between 1.09 (default) and 1.10 on the flat or slightly downhill road gives most accurate results for my M240i xDrive with appropriate weight, gearing, tire size, frontal area and drag coefficient values.
