Performance mods only - what have you done?
Hi All,
About to go JB4 but have read quite a bit about other mods like dump pipe, cats, exhaust, air filter, larger cooler etc. Locally in Oz, what are you guys running and are you A) happy (details would be great of why) and B) what are the future plans. There is a great two part web article that outlines all this stuff and more but I am keen on local, real people and real cars not overseas etc. Good read anyway http://blog.**********s.com/best-bol...8i-n20-engine/ Any feedback and responses are appreciated. |

Hey Mercurysteve ,
im about to go down that path really soon too. Have been speaking to Stuart@BMRAutowerkes. Before anyone can advise you, you need to specify your vehicle details (build date etc) |

There is some really good information in the main tuning section of the forum. Australia wise, there are a number of members on here who can vouch for Burger/BMS Stage 1 tunes, myself included. I've also tried some others which didn't perform to my expectations/did not function as advertised. Having said that, there have also been some horror stories for those running on the higher JB4/Stage 3 settings...
Also comes down to what you are after from the car - is it more straight line performance/top end or instant throttle response

320i/420i
Get a BMR 28 or 28+ tune.. will take the vehicle to 328i power and beyond. Enough said 328i/428i Done many now and feedback has been 95% positive. Both JB1 and JB4... We have also flashed tuned the 328i for one particular customer who wasn't 100% happy with the JB4 as he wanted the power to be a tad smoother so we sorted that out.. the flash tune picked up an extra 4 or 5kw at the wheels from memory but I still rate the Jb4 as a brilliant unit for the 328i/428i. 335i/435i Lots of mods available obviously starting with either JB4 or flash tune. Most 335s will dyno at 185rwkw and tuned between 215-225rwkw. Downpipe and intake will see ~240rwkw. The highest figure we have seen from an F-Series N55 engine is 271rwkw from an M235i with full bolt ons. Just need someone to pull the trigger on a big turbo to see what we can do with the N55 |

I think 271 would be awesome.
I have the JB1 on the wifes 328 and it really is a fantastic bang for buck mod. I may be purchasing a m135i in a year or so and I would be happy with maxing out the stock turbo. Stuart, what was the full list of upgrades of the m235i that made 271rwkws? |

Thanks all.
So the jb4 with no other mods in a 2012 late 328i took an hour or just over, neat job wiring wise etc. Boy am I happy for pure seat of the pants an straight line punch. It's been a great result and is a cheap bang for buck. I will do the dump pipe also and go stage 2 I think and that's it. I believe stage two with larger DP is safe, feel free to post opinions. Very happy now, it's the car it should be stock. That said - I can feel that jerkyness people refer to, especially when decelerating and the auto changes down to the lower gears, bit jerky there. Acceleration is smooth and much punchier. |

High Flow Cat Downpipe Catback Exhaust (forgot the brand, customer sourced it himself) BMR Tuning Charge Pipe AFE Cold Air Intake Wagner Intercooler For a 335/435 to make that power we would need to flash tune it (as opposed to JB4) to get the extra power that the M235 comes with as standard over the 335/435. |

In theory yes.
Are you looking at a new M135 or an older one.. If it was me personally I'd try and get a 2012 or early 2013 build with the pneumatic wastegate, better for tuning/more gains and better e85 compatibility |

Will probably be 2015 as it will be leased.
Electronic wastegate no good Stu? I'm hoping someone will crack the ecu as i'd rather a custom flash tune. |

How much real world difference (pref from your experience first hand) would a larger dump pipe (catless.. yes I know) plus JB4 stage 2 make Vs JB4 stage 1 only on the f30 328?

Boot pin
Fair bit, probably about three quarters of the difference the JB4 makes to a stock vehicle if that makes sense. 328i w/ JB4 + DP + CAI is good for ballpark 195-200rwkw and it feels v quick |

Mods for 428i
Hey, I've recently bought a 428i and am also new to the car scene but I want to do performance mods for it. Any suggestions on where to start and best brands?

Modding is all about customizing your car based on what you like and what you can afford. Be cautious about advice that you get online. Often it's just guys not really listening to you and throwing at you things that they like and that they can afford. I have been modding my 3-Series for almost four years. If someone asked me which mods are the best bang for the buck as far as making the car more fun to drive, I would include these: 1) BootMod3 Stage1 tune- smooth & powerful without having to upgrade a lot of engine hardware 2) Replacement upgrades- noticeably better aftermarket parts when stock parts wear out including Hawk 5.0 brake pads, StopTech crossdrilled brake rotors, Koni Special Active struts/shocks, Eibach springs, both the model and size of tires. For example I upgraded my 225/45-18 runflats to 245/40-18 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. 3) Kies/VAC monoball front thrust arms- They tighten up the vague F30 steering and make it much more enjoyable to drive. From there you can get as deep as you like into engine tuning, exhaust, exterior and interior upgrades, suspension, audio upgrades. The sky is the limit. But the things that I mentioned above, I wouldn't hesitate to do with any 3-Series F3x. https://youtube.com/c/KiesMotorsports Hope this helps! |

I've just recently purchased a B48 330i.
Anyone got experience with tuning of this version motor? The specific power (kW/litre) of this motor from the factory already seems to compare well with output achieved for the MPPS kitted B58 340i (ie approx 92 kW/litre capacity). Is there any easy gains to be had? Last edited by LUX3; 10-12-2021 at 11:20 PM.. Reason: Edit |
