Hi there

This may be a silly question, but when I engage my handbrake this light comes on. (See picture) it’s the red exclamation mark with the circle around it. Is this the right one?

I can see there is also a ‘P’ with a red circle but that never seems to light up?

When I do a quick google, some websites say that the parking brake should be the ‘P’ circle?

I don't have the 6WB cluster, but on the two F30s I've owned, that is the the icon I get when handbrake is on.

But, my wife's X3 which has an electric handbrake shows the P in a circle icon.

So with that in mind I'd normally assume that the icon difference is to distinguish between electric and manual handbrakes. But if that was the case I can't explain why the F3x cluster has the other icon since I don't believe it's used in any cars with an electric handbrake...unless they left the spot for it just in case it was to be used in other cars in future. Odd.

Another possibility is different regions could use the other icon too. I know that on US spec cars they just have the word BRAKE show up - you can just about make out where that is under your handbrake icon. Maybe other countries or regions use the P icon instead.

Since you have manual handbrake is normal the red light when handbrake is engaged. P is the gearbox position and is a different thing

No he doesn't mean the P there. He means the P handbrake icon like in this pic:

Yes I have a manual handbrake. Just checked owners manual and it’s the right one. Confusing when the 6WB also as the other light but never gets used

mine says BRAKE when i use the hand brake but im pretty sure thats cause im in the US with a 6WB
