America's Tires Scratched all 4 of my Rims
I just got new S-04 Pole Position Tires installed by America's tires (225/45-18) and I think their tool scratched all 4 of my rims in the same spots on all the rims.
I went back to America's Tire and the representative said he'll escalate it to his manager. I'm not sure if this was the specific person who changed my tires or if it was their tool. |

Is it scratched scratched, or is it possibly the plastic cap that holds the wheel on that rubbed off? That's what it appears in the pics, but I could be wrong. Either way that is a very shotty job of taking care of someone.

While it is too late now, I'll point out a...um...pointer for next time. When your bring the wheels in, take pics of their condition, then be sure to go out of your way to tell the manager, "you kindly expect the wheels to return in the same condition they were left."

This happened to me on my old accord coupe. They refurbished the wheels for me for free. Same damage.

Same as above comment. Mine are the black 624m alloys and discount tyre nicked them all up installing 4 new Michelin PSS. They covered the refurb.

Unless, are those deep scratches? Or do they feel shallow? They either need to pay for a refinish, or new wheels. Depends on how much fight you have in you for it. Obvious that was the result of some machine. Always walk around your car when picking it up from anywhere; this includes the dealer.

Most likely happened when balancing. The tech (and I use that term loosely) didn't use the correct cone in the hub. Looks like he used a cup to hold wheel in place. Those cups are for steel wheels with hub caps, not painted aluminum wheels.
Pic of what I suspect he used.

I never had much luck with refinishing, the paint always has issues. I'd press for new wheels.

I have had wheels refinished and the results were perfect. A friend has a car shop that works on mainly German sports cars...mainly Porsches. He has a local wheel guy that he uses and the results he gets are always great. The shop owner showed me a few wheel he had just worked on from high end cars and they looked great.
I recommend talking to a trusted auto repair shop. Find one that specializes in Porsches, Ferrari's etc and see who they use. Drivers of these kind of cars don't let wheels go unrepaired plus they expect good workmanship. The other one is try your local BMW dealer. They send out the lease returned cars with wheel problems every day so they will have a recommended shop. |

One of the big issues with wheel refinishing is the OEM sprays powder coat while most repair shops use wet paint (Wurth refinish or car paint). Neither of these refinish options holds up as well as the powder used by the OEM.
Even if you find a shop that powders the wheel, keep in mind that powders are not created equal. There's many companies in the powder business and they vary in quality and durability.

I thought I would give an update to this. The manager gave me the option of either repairing my rim (sending it down to LA one rim at a time and each rim would take ~2 weeks) or offered me the choice of 2 other rims.
Because my rims weren't in the best condition in the first place, I decided to go for the new rims (Konig Inception - I believe they are custom for BMW 18" rims). I'm thinking of maybe still fixing up my OEM rims. I like the machined finish on these rims better, but the style of the OEM rims. What do you guys think. I don't currently have any good picture, but it looks better when seen from the front as they match the chrome accents on the grill. They are definitely scratched - you can feel it. |

These "chain" tire stores aren't always your best bet.
Sure they might be cheap and easy to find / local but I have an independent I've been using who is local, who knows my face and gives me great prices and service. It would be in everyone's best interest to form a RELATIONSHIP with a tire guy who knows his equipment, maintains his equipment and has high standards. I don't trust my Volks or even my OEM wheels to anyone else, if I must go elsewhere (emergency or while traveling) , I'll stand there and watch them or specifically mention the condition of the wheels ahead of time. Good luck OP. |
