No. That is BMW Website price. Cost is around 1/5th of that.

I tried it last night and for my .RAR extractions, USB 1 was 7.5 gb but USB 2 and 3 were 7.9 gb. My drives formatted to 7.8 so USB 2 and 3 wouldn't fit. Strange that not all of us are extracting to the same size. I'm wondering if it is due to the .rar extraction software. I used unRARx for MAC.

No. All 3 of those sizes are too large. Something is not right with the construction of them.

They should be:

DVD or USB 1 = 7.07 GB.
DVD or USB 2 = 7.44 GB.
DVD or USB 3 = 7.35 GB.

Hmmm, I'll check them when I get home.

Ok, from finder on my MAC:
USB 1 is 7,599,372,517 bytes (7.6 GB on disk) for 49 items
USB2 is 7,989,215,476 bytes (7.99 GB on disk) for 25 items
USB3 is 7,899,473,192 bytes (7.9 GB on disk) for 22 items

Everything seems to be running 500 GB larger. Any ideas? The first 22 .rar files were 700mb and the 23rd was a bit smaller, IIRC.

I have put all the files onto larger flash drives so can see if it installs, or re expand the files.

This is all the same thing. The difference is one representation (yours) is in Decimal notation (Base 10) and the other (mine) is in Binary notation (Base 2).
  • 1,000 bytes decimal is a binary kilobyte, or 2^10 = 1,024 binary bytes.
  • 1,000,000 bytes decimal is a binary megabyte, or 2^20 = 1,048,576 bytes or 1024 binary bytes ^2.
  • 1,000,000,000 bytes decimal is a binary gigabyte, or 2^30 = 1,073,741,824 bytes or 1024 binary bytes ^3.
Incidentally, this is why an 8 GB Thumb Drive, or 8,000,000,000 bytes decimal, which / 1024^3, = 7.45 GB binary bytes actual capacity, and why some manufacturers' 8 GB flash drives end up being slightly too small to accommodate USB2, and possibly USB3 too.

Thus, allowing for some minor differences due to rounding, we effectively both have the same thing:
  • DVD or USB 1 = 7.07 GB binary, which is 7.07 GB x 1024^3 = 7,591,354,695 decimal bytes.
  • DVD or USB 2 = 7.44 GB binary, which is 7.44 GB x 1024^3 = 7,988,639,170 decimal bytes.
  • DVD or USB 3 = 7.35 GB binary, which is 7.35 GB x 1024^3 = 7,892,002,406 decimal bytes.
Then to complicate things even more, size on disk is another matter, as data will always occupy a full cluster on the disk. So for example, a disk formatted to use 4k cluster sizes, with one 3.4k file on it and another 4.k file on it will occupy 16k of space, even though the actual file sizes total only 7.5k:

File............................|------3.4k------|....|-----------4.1k--------| = 7.5k data
Disk Blocks (Cluster).....|--------4k----------|--------4k----------|--------4k----------| = 16k storage space occupied

For this reason, as small a cluster size as possible is always desirable, else as data is written to the disk, a lot of storage space is wasted, particularly with large numbers of very small files.

This is also why the size on disk you report in parenthesis is slightly larger than your actual total data decimal sizes reported.

Anyway, your disks are setup correctly and they match, and they should each fit on an 8 GB Thumb Drive, depending on the manufacturer of course.

I used StuffIt on my mac to expand the compressed files.

I also used one 32gig USB drive. I renamed the USB drive to "USB1" and placed the USB 1 files into the root of the drive. I created sub folders for USB2 and USB3.

After completion of loading the USB1 data to the car, I ejected the USB drive. Connected it to my mac and just moved files from USB2 to root. Renamed drive to USB2 and connected it to the car. Went really fast. Repeat steps for USB3.

Worked like a charm.

Not unless you retrofitted a CIC system into it.

It will though work on your 2013 328i.

FYI. For those asking, 2014 Europe PREMIUM map for CIC is now also available.

We are still waiting on 2014 Europe and North America NEXT maps for NBT.
