Entertaining the idea of an F31 Engine Swap...

So I just finished up my 6mt n54 swap into an e91 wagon. Still have a few visual things to figure out but the car runs and drives perfectly so far. Unfortunately for me, my brain always likes to take things to the next level and now I'm debating selling my e91 and buying and f31 wagon instead 😂😂

Eventually, I'm going to do a full f80 m3 conversion on an f31 wagon, but for now that's financially impossible for me. However, I would be able to afford getting a wrecked f30 335i or 340i. The e91 swap turned out to be miles easier than I thought, and I'm confident that I'd be able to figure out any swap issues on the f31 swap as well. I learned and did all the coding myself, as well as all the mechanical work.

The goal here would be to have a running and driving n55 or b58 powered xdrive f31 wagon, pushing roughly around 400whp. Who want to see it done?

I'm thinking it'd be easiest to swap over literally the entire wiring harness and modules from the f30 and then just add a few wires for the trunk specific things and code it in.

Also, thoughts on b58 vs n55? Both can make good power, n55 has a little more tuning options atm because it's been out longer, but the b58 is looking real nice with the closed deck design and people have already been pushing some serious power out of it on the new supra.

Let me make one thing clear here though, I'm not interested in hearing that it can't be done or it's financially not worth it. I love wagons, and I love doing crazy projects. It can be done, it's been done before already. I'm just speculating at the moment, thinking through a few things. Let me know what you guys think!

LCI Msport with B58 probably best.

I'm definitely going to do it eventually, I'd say in about 2-3 years. By then prices will have dropped even more on the f80's and I'll be able to pick one up for cheaper

Absolutely on board. That's on a list of possibilities for my F31 in the future. Good luck, and keep us posted.

I really want to know more about the manual swap. I have an auto and hate it.

Will be nice to see.

Mission Performance started a build thread for a 2016 F31 B58 spec build in San Marino Blue but it's been a few months without an update. Wanna take over the project?

Here is Alex's B58 M equipped X drive wagon last month on the dyno and at fontana..

He had to rebuild it after an Uber driver smashed into him several months ago.

ps-yes it is indeed x-drive however he programmed out the fwd for the dyno

San Marino Blue + B58 + 437M wheels (I think) ... cannot think of a better combination. Nice!

That's such a beautiful color haha. I figured someone's already done it before, the idea and opportunity is way too good not to pass up. Hopefully I'll be the next one

Awesome! Hit up Alex - I can't imagine a better person to glean information from than him when it comes to something like this - he can address the architecture, engineering, programming (to make everything play nice) and the eventual tuning to maximize what has been built.

ps-rumor has it this car may be for sale in the near future - can't imagine what the next build will be

YES! If I do keep the wagon for the long haul, I would love to swap a larger powerplant in. I wonder if a BMW TTV8 would mate nicely =)

Love that SMB + B48 + M3 conversion. So dope mayn!

Considering how disappointed I am in the G20 and BMW not bringing the new wagon over.

I too am very interested in doing this as well in a couple years.

I'm guessing the best route is a donor car, but I imagine it will require a lot of programming to make the various ECUs to play nice?

Probably Easier to do a s55 or n55 swap than a b58 due to the cooling since u have a n20
